How to buy new speakers? - Page 6

Thank you Dave^.   Yeah a SVS rep just called me back to let me know my sub is on backorder till end of June..doh! He also said the L series isn't even on the radar as they have numerous projects/products to come out this year they are working on.

thank you again.  Your vids were very entertaining and helpful.  I'll try to get my Doberman to help me but he'll probably just turn his head to the side, growl at me and go to sleep. lol.

Lance:

If your Doberman is not going to help with your installation, you'll have to find a movie with some awesome barking dog sfx when you've got everything hooked up and let him know that "payback's a bitch..."!

Yes, they've got some neato things in the pipeline, or so I've heard ;) And I bet they're going gangbusters getting their sealed box subs out the door. If that wasn't such an expensive product (compared to normal  subs) that would have been a perfect fit for my living room. But that would have been a $600+ jump in price.

That Doberman will be good for keeping your friends / family from "borrowing" your new gear!

Thank you Mike I appreciate the welcome.

@Dave:  I thought the exact same thing when viewing your vid and their site whether to get the other sub or not.  This one will be more than enough for this house in both quality and price.

How did the 700w amp trial go?  If it went well are you looking at any particular models.

I've not had a chance to play with the amp. Maybe next weekend. My interest is modest, at best, so I'm more curious than a serious buyer. If I were shopping, Emotiva and Outlaw would be top of my list, based on reputation and price.

It's too windy (and loud) to run Audyssey today, so I took photos of the final setup. You'll see I swapped them for tweeter-in configuration. It felt right the right thing to do, since my speakers are farther apart than optimal, because of the room config. I've still got them set for 0db, though. I'll let Audyssey deal with that.

Higher Res & Full Picasa album. The best, below.

(Warning grill-less shots for those of you who are speaker-prudes )

Front Setup

The Front View (running Xbox 360 Visualizer). Adjusted TV mount so it is no longer unlevel to Center and put some leather-backed felt between the gap so if it sinks, it won't crunch the Rosenut finish)

Front Setup (topless)

No Grills :)

Surround

Left Surround.

Surround (topless)

Surround Banana Plugs

Banana plugs. The stands have a cable-routing feature, so except for this bit, they are hidden. And I ran the surrounds under the floor (via basement), and they go through underneath the base. The size difference between the plug and wire was too great to use heat-shrink tubing, so I had to kludge it with hot glue. You can see that SVS speakers are ready for bare wire, plugs, normal connection, bi-wire and bi-amp. The plugs are, well, plugged in the box (I think it's because those wacky Europeans made their AC plugs match speaker connections and could accidently plug stuff in.)

Stuff. Bungs & Freq Response & Feet.

SVS is truly an Engineering-driven company, because after setting up your speakers, there's spare parts! :) I tossed all the extra feet, frequency response charts, and foam plugs (bungs) into the MCS box.

The boxes

The boxes. Thankfully I have a clean, unfinished basement to keep these, in case I ever move. This SVS shrine is about 8 ft long, 5 ft tall, and 2 ft deep.

Nice photos.  I was curious to see the surrounds on the stands as I'm thinking of buying the stands as well.  I was wondering how tall the stands were so thank you.  Also glad to see all the spare/extra items they send you.  Seems like SVS is on top of their game so I should be very happy as well.

The stands are the one less-than-amazing product I've seen from SVS. Their wall mounts, Omnimounts 30, are perfect for the MBS and sold with no apparent markup. The stands are good and stable, but aren't a dead-perfect match. The MBS doesn't mate to them or lock in (I used the rubber pads the stands came with to grip the MBS). You have to jockey it around and fine the best centering by eye (or ruler).

Now, this may be normal for these large-footprint surrounds. Some googling suggests that Paradigm's custom-made stands for the mini-monitors are the same: undersized top plate with no lock-in specific to the speakers. So if this is what Paradigm does, I can't ding SVS much for it.

If you're motivated, you could look around and see if there are stands designed for these large surrounds. Otherwise, buy from SVS. Despite my minor grumbles, I'm content with them and like the wire-hiding a lot.

Well that is interesting to know as well.  I had assumed they would lock in.. what I get for assuming lol.  Yeah I'll take a look around but in the end it's not a deal breaker.  Seems to be the norm somewhat anyway.

They just put the MCS-01 center speakers in Rosenut on backorder as well till late June..sigh. Thank you for the heads up on the stands.

I don't know anything about the M-line being on backorder. But I am curious about your sub's delay. I might know why that is, but I could be wrong and can't comment on it :)

Yes. And conveniently, I have a subwoofer box large enough to hold a human body...

I was told: "Lots of orders, basically. Just ran short on some components to build them."

Lance- Did you ever get your speakers?  What do you think of them?

And did you end up getting the sub with the revised digital amp? And I think they were revising components in the speakers last Fall.

Hi   I have been reading your thread about new speakers.  I find it really hard to beat the B & W's.  My dated equipment consists of a Sony Blue Ray, A Sony  DA4es I have some B & W 800's and was going to install ceiling speakers.  Now I have run out of money, so I had to put the B & W ccm80 (in ceiling speakers)

on ebay.  I am selling them cheap and they have never been out of the box, other than for pictures.  If anyone is interested check out my buy it now price of

$ 260 ea speaker.  I have three.  They are on the net for way more than that retail.  Thanks and good luck with your speaker selection.

I didn't demo any B&W's - the ones I saw at my local stereo shop were outside my price range :) They certainly have their fans and I've read good things about them. And high-end B&Ws are gorgeous... The 800 series looked so nice in the showroom floor...
