Weekly RoundUp 2-2-2010 - Page 2

As I suspected (because I know there's a huge group of people out there dying to know what's going on! ), amazon shipped my copy of The Music Man last night and it now posts an expected delivery date of Saturday, February 8.  It'll possibly get here a day or two sooner.

The first disc in the shipment was supposed to be delivered tomorrow but arrived today.

Thanks as always for the round-up, gents.

Doctor Who: Complete Specials (standard DVD) came home this afternoon. BBdot-com says $36.99 on sale, and local store matched it (when I gave them a printout).

Odd that "DW: Waters Of Mars" standard DVD doesn't show on the website at all, yet I think I saw copies on the shelf...? Didn't take the time to copy down the SKU and search that way.

Amelia will be a rental sometime in the future.

Saturday Feb 6 update - was back in the area so stopped in to the store. Standard-def DVD of "Waters Of Mars" was there. Sales tag listed it as "docu" (documentary), but the store personnel had the brains to place it in the proper (TV) section. SKU was 9695056. Tried entering that number on the BB website just now, and it came back to tell me "there's no such animal."

How to make sure *not* to sell your wares, in two easy lessons.

Found a few things at Target while there this afternoon:
Mary Tyler Moore Season 6:  $22.99
The Wolfman:  $19.99 (with a $10 movie ticket)

House of the Devil:  $14.99

Might just get that Wolfman set since I'm pretty sure I'll go see the movie.

Got an email from Amazon the MTMS Season 6 dropped to $17.99 so they credited my card back!

I went to BB for the same thing but I only found the Blu-ray regular disc.  I think the "Nut up or shut up" edition is only on DVD and that all Blu-rays have those features without a second disc.  If you go online it only shows the normal Blu-ray and the NUOSU DVD.

No, there is a Nut Up or Shut Up blu ray (I got the LAST one when mom went back to the store).   The website is screwed up.  They have the same UPC & SKU for the bonus disc version & the regular.  When you click on it it takes you to the regular blu ray.  I've read that a lot of stores didn't get any & that the ones that did got very few.   The blu rays with the Nut Up or Shut Up bonus disc are going for big bucks on Ebay already.  Glad I got one.

Okay then, I guess no more BB when a new disc comes out and Target has the same price if they are not going to actually carry what is in the flyer.

Well.  Here's your "Mike Frezon's a nervous Nelly update."

My copy of TMM arrived safe and sound from amazon today--just two days after release date.

I honestly don't know why I get so nervous about these sorts of things.

I've watched the first half-hour or so and it looks/sounds great!

Yeah, I got to BB at 3:30 PM Tuesday and there were no BR's with the extra disk.  Lots of 2-disc DVD's for only $2.00 less

I fail to see the point in advertising such a special and then not carrying enough copies to last a week or so, not to mention even one day.  This only serves to annoy and alienate people like me who couldn't get there at the opening bell. Naturally I left BB without spending a dime and planning to boycott them for at least a month (makes me feel good even though I know it doesn't hurt them at all).  In my case, I am so bummed that I decided not to buy this extra-expensive movie until it's on a good sale, so the movie lost a sale, too.

I actually fail to see the point in making these silly limited availability extras, anyhow.  What can such a strategy possibly accomplish?

It gives people incentive to come into Best Buy which creates an opportunity for them to buy more stuff from their store. Even if the bonus disc copies are gone, most people are still going to buy the movie there.

It did work in the sense that I did buy the movie there because it was the same price as Target and I wanted to pick up ID4 and Ice Age 3.  If I had known of that bait and switch BS I would have bought it at Target since I was headed there anyway to pick up Big Trouble in Little China and then saw RoboCop cheap so I bought it too.  However BB has now lost a customer for these releases and will only shop for the super bargains.

I hate store exclusives and it sucks that people inevitably get left out in the cold but they do not qualify as bait and switch. It's stated in the ad that they have a minimum of 3 copies of the Blu-ray and 5 of the 2 disc DVD.

Don't get me started on store exclusives.

In fact, I started an entire thread on the subject in the Music Forum once upon a time.  I keep reviving it whenever I--inevitably--get burned.  And I don't buy a passel of new music...

It's an aggravating practice.

It's a pity if "most" people are so gullible or lazy.  Not that it made a whit of difference, but I let the sales person know I was not getting it there.  I'm sure they have no feedback, of course.

I still think it would give BB much better PR if ALL their copies of a given title they get in on release date (or ever for that matter) did have what ever extra they have negotiated.  People would still have the incentive to purchase there.  I mean, how much more is that going to cost them?

I do agree that it's bad policy by the studios to put out these exclusives in any respect.

It does if they never had their 3 copies and since no one with authority is actually verifying the veracity of their ad, it could well be bait and switch.  If I was there at store opening and had caught them not actually having the minimum 3 copies, what could I do about it other than leave the store?  How could I impose a penalty for their false advertising?

I don't think I was gullible or lazy but rather ignorant of the underhanded practice that BB has.  I had assumed I had just read the add wrong and that only the DVD was "Nut up or shut up" because Blu-ray can hold so much more than the movie so they only needed one disc to have every extra.  Adding to that idea was the belief that every disc on release date would be the "special" version as you stated they should be as in they simply would not have any normal editions for the first week until they had to order more to replenish the supply.  There were tons of special version DVDs and I don't think there was one that wasn't but I didn't check that carefully.

If you were there when they opened and they didn't have the minimum, you could call the Better Business Bureau and report them. Like you said though, you don't know if they did or didn't have the copies so you can't call it bait and switch without knowing for sure.

To compound the problem w/ these exclusives, it seems that at least the BB exclusives don't even have separate SKUs.   They just have a sticker on top indicating it, and that's about it.

I had a heck of a time buying their exclusive version of the Inglourious Basterds BD back during its release week in the midst of the holiday shopping season.  I went to BB for it mainly because of the exclusive (and was willing to pay the couple bucks extra for it).  I didn't want to buy the non-exclusive one there and had them allow me to open one up to doublecheck and then exchange it at another local BB instead -- had to check 2 others to find a few still available.

And part of the problem is they can't even easily tell you (from the inventory system) what they have at the stores or to confirm that the exclusive even exists (unless the clerk/manager was actually personally aware of the exclusive) because the SKUs are the same.

While legally I cannot prove it, from a practical consumer POV it was.  To have the legal requirement of just 3 of the special versions while having 50+ of the normal edition is effectively B&S or at least BS from a consumer's POV even if it isn't the legal definition.  It would have been more honest if they simply only carried the special version and no regular versions at least on the release date and if they didn't order enough then they lose some sales.
