So J.D. Salinger passed away. I think a movie, done right, of Catcher in the Rye is long overdue. What directer do you think should take it on? I wrote my argument for a film in my blog here. The guy who jumped in my head was Gus Van Sant.

Never was a fan of the book at all, or the two stalkers it seemed to "inspire". Guess if the right filmmaker takes it on it could be good but it doesn't mean it has to be made.

I think that's one book that should stay a book, particularly since Salinger was so clear in his wishes.

I tend to agree that this is an unfilmable book, but they did make  a movie out of "Naked Lunch" which is infinitely more unfilmable.  That said, I don't see how Salinger's death would in any way change his wishes for the film to not be filmed.  With as private as he was, I would be shocked if he didn't have his wishes detailed to the extreme in his will.

I agree.   Why dishonor the man's wishes -- I just don't get it, just leave the book alone.

How many superficial variations have already been made already?

Exactly. The Royal Tenenbaums is a love letter to Salinger's body of work, with the Tenenbaum family a surrogate of the Glass family living in a vision of Holden Cauffield's New York on the margins.

I'm more interested in seeing if the estate will allow any of his unpublished work to be seen by the world now that he has passed away. He always mentioned in the smattering of interviews that he has given since withdrawing from the world that he hadn't stopped writing, just publishing.
