Apple iPad buyers / Owners thread - Page 9

 Hi Ron,
Bought the 32GB iPad at Best Buy here in San Juan on Saturday. I LOVE IT !!!!
I am , however, having problems with WiFi signal strength as well. I have a cable modem connected to an Airport Extreme and haven't had problems with other equipments so far. Someone told me that I could change the Airport settings using Manual Setup in the AirPort Utility and changing the Radio mode setting from 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) to 802.11n only (5GHz), and that this would improve my WiFi signal strength. I'm just concerned if I will be able to use my iPhone's WiFi after I do that.

How many Apps have you installed so far?

So far, just a completely horrible experience.  $169 dollars and several hours later, the device is a still a doorstop.  Although iPhoto recognizes the iPad (no items to import...no kidding), iTunes refuses to do so.  The completely unhelpful apple support page lists several things I have already done, and their tech support service is closed until tomorrow.  I have 10.6 now, as well as iTunes 9.1, and I've unplugged and restarted every possible thing, and all the frigging Macbook iTunes sees is my AppleTV downstairs.  I'm a patient guy.  No one has been more excited about this thing than me.  But I'm pretty close to throwing my hands up in the air and returning everything tomorrow.  I thought Apple's whole schtick was ease of use.

I'm sure the device is great, but I can't review it.

Sorry for the sourness.

Chuck, you need OS X 10.8. I assume you have logged on and updated the OS?
Nelson,
I had 10.4.11 (Tiger).  I needed OS 10.5 according to the pop-up, and 10.5.8 according to the specs page.  Those are not downloadable from 4.11.  I needed to purchase Leopard.  That was the $169 I ate this evening (second trip to the Apple store).  After that download, iTunes simply wouldn;t read the device, even though I had just upgraded it to 9.1 (and confirmed).

Fortunately, my rage has subsided.  I re-downloaded iTunes 9.1 and re-installed it.  Everything is now working, and I am loading the iPad up with stuff for my wife.

Real time with the iPad will have to be tomorrow.

But I look forward to finally playing with it.

Ate my post.  Nelson, I needed 10.5 (and 10.5.8 according to Specs).  I had 4.11.  That meant I had to purchase Leopard, I could not download it.  That was the 169 bucks.

I reinstalled 9.1 after installing the new OS, and it finally sees the thing.  I'll play with it tomorrow, in a much calmer mood,
post #246 of 721
Thanks, Nelson.  Yeah, but I had to purchase 10.6.  Could not download.

Anyways, after several on/offs and re-installs, I think I am in business.

Review tomorrow night, once I cheer up.

Great Chuck! Glad to hear you're set now. I'm going to have to do what you did on my G5 which is still running Tiger to get it up to Leopard so I'll be able to use it to dock to. So good to know how you got there.

Raul, your iPhone is 802.11b/g only, so if you set your Airport Extreme to n-only your iPhone will NOT be able to connect using WiFi.

Is your Airport Extreme firmware up to date? Apple just released an update today for the late-2009 models of Airport Extreme and Time Capsule. When did you buy yours?

Sorry for the triple post above.  It appeared that HTF ate my first post, so I shortened my thoughts and wrote a second.  It appeared that HTF also ate the second, so I shortened further and wrote the third.  And finally, it appeared that HTF ate the third, so I gave up.  It obviously ate none of them, and they repeat info, so I apologize.

Anyways, got about an hour with my wife's.  In-house wifi is fine, and the web is quite fast.  Faster than I am used to.  I'll be able to play a lot more with my own (my own Apps, music, movies, junk, etc) than with hers.  I downloaded Gone With the Wind (book) for my wife, two free Marvel comics for me, and a trailer for IM2.  Just to test the media.  Liked all of it, but only played with each briefly.  It immediately oriented itself for my wife's gmail account.  No set-up required.  She loved that.  Hopefully it will be as easy for my cox.net account.

Slightly smaller than expected, but I actually like the size.  I'm sure the future will bring some size options, but I wouldn't want it a LOT bigger.  Maybe just an inch or two total.

Doubt I'll use the iPhone apps much, so hopefully most of the Apps I like will get redone for the iPad screen.

I do believe I'll utilize this differently than my phone.  So when I upgrade my iPhone this year, I might get the 32GB (or 64GB or whatever).  I'll be using the iPad for movies on travel (and probably a majority of my music).  That frees up space on my phone, so 16GB might work out better.

I'll play a bit more when I get home.  No games yet.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if any of you have experienced any momentary freezes on your iPad? What I've experienced is if I tap on an app like the Settings or Safari, for example, nothing happens. If I rotate it, the screen does rotate. But after a few seconds, I try the app again and it will function. And that probably has nothing to do with screen rotation. Thanks!

It's definitely not a writing tool. Out of the question. ... [N]ot everyone is a writer. True enough, and not everyone is a voter, but we have an interest in making it easy for people to vote. And not everyone does jury duty, but easy or not, we require it. Writing is important, you never know where creative lightning will strike.

The best negative iPad review I've read. It is is a reasoned and fair. But I think he willfully ignores the coming 3G version (regarding his need to use a phone to get info on the move). And he over-estimates the need for significant writing for the greater population: aside from journalists and bloggers, who carries laptop or keyboard phone all day, prepared for "creative lightning", ready to begin writing?

Sorry if this has been answered.  If I already have an Iphone with an ATT account, can I buy the 3G model and use my 3G service on my IPad when I want to?

No.  But that answer may change on Thursday.  Keep fingers crossed.
Fingers crossed here.  I'm real interested to see OS 4.0 for the iPhone.

What would an OS update have to do with connecting an iPad to your cellphone service? And why would you want to? AT&T charges $30 / mo per "smartphone". The iPad charges $30/mo for "unlimited" 3G service. What's the difference, except perhaps unified billing? Moreover, the iPad's standalone, unsub system offers $15/mo option. Which is not available with an AT&T sub.

Or are you talking about tethering? In which case you don't need a 3G iPad nor an OS update. The iPhone supports tethering. The problem is that AT&T does not.

Right, AT&T might wait for an event like this to announce full tethering support for all devices.  Or just continue to suck ass.

I scanned the Giz article you linked. What grabbed me was the criticism on notifications: how that is fundamentally a bad design for iPad use. (And the screenshot of a FPS game halted by a little blue box saying you've got a message.)

Well Sam, I spent most of the day playing with the iPad.  Had a client who (is all Apple) and picked up several.  I won't go into my long review, but let me just do a punch list:

Excellent:

All the reviews are right, the unit is astonishingly qucker then you'd anticipate.  While it doesn't multi-task** it does what it does very well and very quickly.

The display is vivid and provides a great look.  Video display is fluid with no tearing, and it has a it's refresh is solid enough that it really looks polished.

Access to fully functional RDP clients may be the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I spent most of my time using an iPad to manage a Win7 box via RDP, and managed to get all the multitasking and functions I needed, run Outlook 2007, go straight for all my real apps.. interface with my exchange server.. while RDP on a phone or other device is pretty much a joke, this may be the ultimate lightweight remote administration tool.  If I bought one, my iPad would spend more time looking like windows then an iPad, but that's OK..

The Good:

Audio output is of good to decent quality.  I think they have to be using a different D-A converter, because quite frankly audio isn't as good as present on my iPod touch (I'm using audiobooks as a guide) but it's still better then most competitors and good enough.

Text legibility is good.  Not great, black isn't black enough, but it's good with minimal eye strain.

The bad:

The USBpower pull is wrong.  The unit expects 10W, which is WAY more then USB spec.  WAY more.  Yes, I realize Apple says units will do this.. but they are wrong.  My client's Macbook Pro (an older one) won't charge it.  And, after a small hitch, we managed to completely kill the USB ports on a netbook, which apparently made the effort to give up the juice, and now that USB port is dead.. it won't connect to any device.. :(  If Apple is going to place such a heavy charging burden, the unit should come with two cables: one for charging, one for connecting.  It's both safer for the consumer and it doesn't supply the false concept that like Ipods, it'll just trickle charge via USB.. because in some cases it will, in many cases it won't.

One other bad: the pop ups for reminders are annoying as all sin.  I put 2 stars next to "no multitasking" but this pop-up bit might as well be.  While playing with RDP, I received a popup from AP News, which the client had installed.  I COULD NOT close the damn APNews thing, because the RDP made it where it just seemed to track.  I ended up turning the unit off then on again to get rid of the popup, which wouldn't respond no matter what.  There needs to be controls around pop-ups that prevent this kind of bullshit.  I don't want a popup for anything coming up if I'm in the middle of a task.  If I was writing a letter, and got an "AP News Alert" or whatever, and it stopped a flow of typing, or if you're like me and trapped in an RDP window..

Let me shorthand: this is a really solid product with some pretty damn cool features.  But it also has the feel of being a "1.0" version.  I think there needs to be some kinks worked out.  Some really small kinks, some larger ones.  But the idea is really interesting.  It is true, fyi, the screen is very difficult to read in brighter light (see: outdoors) so if you're used to an ereader (like Kindle) this won't replace that for reading at the beach.

Good input.

I'm loving mine.  I'd kill for a matte screen tho.  F glossy.
Regarding the screen, I'm considering the Invisible Shield film from Zagg. I don't want any scratches on this baby! The ones I've seen tend to be semi matte, so it won't look as glossy.

Though it may inhibit the sensor for the sketching I do on it.

Also, what kind of cases have you guys got? I got the Apple one, but I haven't opened it yet, I might return it. I was hoping for a skin type of thing for the backside.

Any app recommendations?  Anything good for younger kids?

I am not an Apple person and am one of those who believes once you get past the oooh phase most of these things will lay around collecting dust.

However.

I had not realized these things can Remote Desktop into a Windows PC.  Am I understanding this right?  If it weren't for the price I'd pick one of these up simply because I would be able to connect to my HTPC quickly and easily and control my music library without having to turn on my tv (preserve that lamp) or boot up a laptop (which I currently I have tucked away next to the couch for exactly this purpose.)

I have to wonder how easily I'd be able to control my music software, tho.  I use Media Monkey (tried itunes and hated it).  I think fat fingers might make song selection frustrating without some sort of stylus.

Yes, there are multiple RDP & VNC clients available for the iPad. A Google search on "iPad RDP" will turn them up.

However, if that is all you would use it for I have to concur that $500 is a little pricy for what is essentially a big remote...

Sam, what kind (make, model) of router do your parents have? I have Verizon DSL with the Westell router, and although it was delivered pre-configured without any documentation, a quick Google search turned up the ID & PW Verizon uses and 10 minutes later I had reconfigured the wireless settings to my taste. Worth a shot.
