Damages - season 3 thread - Page 2

HOLY MOLY...

Yes, it goes season by season, and it's like a jigsaw puzzle, but crap when the pieces fall into place is it intense!  "3 ... DAYS ... LATER"

Martin Short is turning in one hell of a performance, he absolutely owns that role.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Right up until tonight's episode, I kept wondering about Short's Leonard Winstone character. Every couple of years or so, there's a revelation about some lawyer who's managed to practice for years without getting admitted to practice, or passing the bar exam, or (occasionally) going to law school. I was wondering just how much of a fake Winstone would turn out to be. And now we know.

I love how he keeps insisting to his old man that the Tobins aren't a mark and his relationship isn't a con. What else could it be?

I'll put the following prediction in spoiler protection, even though I'm just guessing:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

If Joe Tobin is acting true to form, he must be looking for a way to eliminate Winstone. If not, he's an even bigger idiot than he's already shown himself to be, since Winstone is more of a threat to the Antigua money than Tessa Marchetti was.

Obviously, all my predictions about Keith Carradine were wrong. It appears that he's there to remind Patty of someone in her past.

Are we going to see Wes again?

Great episode.  I guess it's pretty evident that Carradine is a figment of Patty's imagination (which I started thinking a few episodes ago).  I'm thinking it's her father.

According to the previews, yes.

So far, a great season, and look forward to the season finale.

I wonder how it's doing in the ratings. Will we see a Season 4?
I thought I remember hearing during the first season that there was a six season plan, and Glenn Close was signed on for that long.  Of course I guess that doesn't mean the show will last that long.  Hopefully it does.  This season has been strong, almost as good as the first.

Well, I don't know about 6 but they clearly have plans for 4 with Frobisher being the bad guy again?  I can only assume all this Frobisher stuff is set up for next season.
If there is a next season. There are hints that FX is trying to arrange a joint carriage arrangement, a la Friday Night Lights. If there are no takers this expensive show might be canceled.

Annnnnnd so much for Frobisher being around next season!  This episode cleared up all loose ends so if it was a series finale then so be it.  Fun while it lasted.
I wouldn't count Frobisher out just yet.

Pretty good finale, although a bit rushed (like all the 'Damages' finales have been).  Pretty interesting that the body jumping off the bridge was Mama Tobin.

I enjoyed the finale, and how the pieces ended up fitting together. Definitely some surprises, some which I did not see coming.

And that would be one of them, as I just assumed it was Tom, since we kept hearing about him died by drowning.

Also, as soon as Michael appeared behind Ellen in Patty's apartment, I had a feeling it would be him crashing the car into Patty's.

I was surprised as to just how many loose ends from the first two seasons were wrapped up in this finale.

Most of those peaks into the events of the finale that we saw during the season were quite deceptive.  As far as Mama Tobin jumping off the bridge - is that actually physically possible by a single person? I thought it might have been possible to dump Tom's body.  The view of the bridge made it look the barriers were too high.

The whole season for Joe Tobin turned on the point where he was trying to make a deal with Patty at the beginning, but she turned him down.  If she had given him a deal then and there - all of the following devastation would have been avoided.

I really enjoyed how this season was built around the theme of family. I don't recall a single theme running so strongly through the other seasons be I could be wrong. More of that please.

Wes' actions are pretty odd, but then there has always been something off about the character.

Confused... where did Michael steal the car Ellen was driving?  After she saw him in the apartment didn't she drive off?  How would he know where she was?

She might have still been outside of Patty apartment a few minutes after seeing Michael there.  I didn't quite follow the events exactly.  Michael definitely stole the car while Ellen was on the phone.

Yeah, I think you're right - I believe she still might have been out there on the phone to Patty, who, I know, told her, she was on the way home.  Thanks.
What a series this has been.  It looks as if it might be all over - with so many loose ends being tied up.  A short, contrite, well executed series - much like what happens in Britain.  The wave of the future?  Let's hope.

I was surprised that this season had fairly low ratings. All three seasons were pretty solid especially compared to the dreck on TV Shows now, maybe the series is too demanding for the average dumbed down reality show viewer.

I'm not terribly surprised, since I'm one of the fans who hasn't been watching this year.  I have a finite amount of time to devote to TV series and this year there were just too many other shows I was following for me to squeeze in Damages among all the others - especially since it has been running directly opposite so many broadcast network shows.  I really wish F/X had counter-programmed a little more, the way USA Network tends to, and run the new episodes over the summer when there is less to watch on the Big Four-and-a-Half.  And I say that as someone who has never watched an entire episode of any "reality" show.   Heck, I've reduced to watching one series "live" via the QAM tuner while recording two others because of the networks' diabolical tendency to put all my favorite shows on opposite one another.  Even with time shifting there's only so much TV I can get through in a week.

I was sort of amused by your implication that Damages is losing ratings because the morons who choose other shows can't deal with complex storytelling.  Fringe, Lost, Saving Grace, and Flashforward aren't exactly "park your brain and flop on the couch" shows, either, and I'm pretty sure they all do better in the ratings than Damages.  (Flashforward is likely to be cancelled, but that's because ratings that make you a hit on basic cable get you killed on broadcast networks, not because it isn't out-polling the F/X show)  For various reasons all of these series were more compelling to me this time around than Damages, which I'll either pick up in reruns or catch on Netflix after the end of May sweeps. I hope the show sticks around, and I look forward to watching this season when it is complete, but every year something has to give in my list of shows to follow, and this year Damages was one of those.

Regards,

Joe

It really is more a matter of time than scheduling, because FX re-ran each episode so often during the week that there was always another opportunity to catch it. During those Mondays when it conflicted with Castle, Saving Grace and Nurse Jackie, I just picked up the 11pm broadcast -- and if I'd missed that, there were others.

It's the kind of show where it'd almost be more fun to watch in a marathon, but spoilers are too much of a risk (for me, at least). As for the ratings, I've given up trying to guess why some things catch on and other don't.

Oh, definitely.  That and DVR space.  If I could just grab and hold shows indefinitely I could watch them months later.  But as it is, the disk fills up quickly and I don't have the time, money or energy to hack the Comcast box to add storage or add a DVD burner to my system.  (The situation is not helped by my recent tendency to hang onto the last couple of episodes of Lost, Fringe and Flashforward and review them several times before the next new one.  )  Since at least two of those shows won't be an issue next year, maybe I'll have room for Damages again.

Man I miss my networked TiVo, but there is no way I can swing the cost of an HD player plus the monthly fees.  I'm trying to cut expenses, not add to them.  (My cable bill is actually going down starting next month, because my condo association renegotiated our bulk purchase deal to include digital first tier.  So now I'll just be paying around $12.00 a month for my HD service and DVR. )

Regards,

Joe

With me, it's review discs. But I'm trying to cut back.
