I'm not terribly surprised, since I'm one of the fans who hasn't been watching this year. I have a finite amount of time to devote to TV series and this year there were just too many other shows I was following for me to squeeze in
Damages among all the others - especially since it has been running directly opposite so many broadcast network shows. I really wish F/X had counter-programmed a little more, the way USA Network tends to, and run the new episodes over the summer when there is less to watch on the Big Four-and-a-Half. And I say that as someone who has never watched an entire episode of any "reality" show.

Heck, I've reduced to watching one series "live" via the QAM tuner while recording two others because of the networks' diabolical tendency to put all my favorite shows on opposite one another. Even with time shifting there's only so much TV I can get through in a week.
I was sort of amused by your implication that
Damages is losing ratings because the morons who choose other shows can't deal with complex storytelling.
Fringe, Lost, Saving Grace, and
Flashforward aren't exactly "park your brain and flop on the couch" shows, either, and I'm pretty sure they all do better in the ratings than
Damages. (
Flashforward is likely to be cancelled, but that's because ratings that make you a hit on basic cable get you killed on broadcast networks, not because it isn't out-polling the F/X show) For various reasons all of these series were more compelling to me this time around than
Damages, which I'll either pick up in reruns or catch on Netflix after the end of May sweeps. I hope the show sticks around, and I look forward to watching this season when it is complete, but every year something has to give in my list of shows to follow, and this year
Damages was one of those.
