The first step in a Paramount MOD program?  I guess time will tell.

It also is a necessary step to replace the brick and mortar stores that are not carrying older titles.   I do hope this is a good sign that they are going to pay more attention to their library.  I also think that Sony will start some kind of MOD program in conjunction with their standard DVD releases.

MOD programs inevitably canibalise regular DVD releases. Look what has happened to Warner.

Chicken and the egg.

Do MOD programs cannibalize regular DVD releases, or are titles that would never stand a snowball's chance in hell of being released on DVD escape from the vaults because of MOD?

I have to agree.  I do not think we would ever have seen any of the Marie Dressler films or the early sound musicals on standard DVD.  But there are titles in the WA collection that cried out for a standard release, such as THE MAD MISS MANTON and STRAWBERRY BLOND.  I will take those two and others as an MOD to be able to get ON BORROWED TIME and THE STORY OF MANKIND along with the early Clark Gables and the westerns.

I think the issue here, at least with regards to Warner, is that we now have to take close to everything on MOD.  If that's the baseline, then I could easily see why folks are threatened by MOD programs.   It becomes an all or nothing scenario.  Of course, some will argue that we are already at nothing so the point becomes moot.

I think it is the economy that canibalised regular DVD releases.  People cut down on buying, stores stopped carrying every title, so they had to figure out another way to release titles.

Paramount however has basically put their catalogue releases on hold.  Other than the occasional Centennial release, they have been very quiet with older films.

A MOD program is better than the nothing we are getting today.
