Spartcus: Blood and Sand - Page 5

The thing is, they needed to drug Crixus not because it's what it would take for Spartacus to best him, but because the house was trying to protect him against all injury.  They need Spartacus ready for real fights.  So, think about it more like protecting their investment.  :)

Understood. Can't wait for season 2.  But I think we might have to wait a year for that. :(

For those interested, the actor who plays Doctore/Oenomaus in Sparticus also plays a major character in the PC game, Dead Space, one of my favorite games of all times. His body was digitized in the game. I can't believe I missed it. I knew there was something about Peter Mensah, his voice was so familiar in the second episode.

With the start battling cancer, (though responding well) Starz has optioned a short series designed to give some time before Season 2.  A 6 episode Prequel, about the rise of the history of the house of Baitus, the Threcians, etc.

Los Angeles, Calif. (NCTA Cable Show 2010) – May 11, 2010 – Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz’ hit original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” Production on the second season of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” was postponed this spring to allow Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the first season, to be treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in New Zealand. His doctors indicate that the actor is responding well. Whitfield will appear in the prequel briefly. But Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave. With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.

“The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of ‘Spartacus,’ giving audiences the engaging experience they’ve come to expect,” said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. “We look forward to continuing the Spartacus story.”

Produced by Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen and Steven S. DeKnight, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” was the highest rated show for the 18-49 demographic among all cable networks for 12 of the 13 Fridays on which it aired based on coverage rating.* The production team remains intact for the six-part prequel.

I'm sorry it arises out of Andy's misfortune, but it's gonna be friggintastic!

Cancer Free!  Spartacus Season 2 onward!  :)  Plus, we get a mini-6 episode storyline that occurs before Spartacus is captured, bringing back Hannah and Lawless, etc. to reprise their roles.

Congrats to Andy!

We had some friends over tonight, and they were talking about the best action we'd seen in a while, and they had seen some of Spartacus.  We watched a set of episodes and of course the finale.   That finale is, out of every episode of TV I've watched this summer, the most heart stopping moments of television in years.  While I loved LOST (and debated it here) and several other shows, nothing had that "leap off the couch" moment like the finale to this.  The filming and method behind it were so good.. I love everything about that finale.

They talked at Comicon about how during the series, the costume designers put subtle clues in the clothes to mark people who would die (scarabs, spider shadows, skull jewelry) now I find I need to watch it back to catch some of the detail.

It's funny at the Comic-Con panel when they ask Andy who he hates the most when he's in character, and they all point at Viva.

I agree.  As I said a page back, I consider the season one finale to be one of the best season finales of any show, ever.  It's right up there with The West Wings "Two Cathedrals," and BSG's "Crossroads."  I might have enjoyed the LOST series finale a tad more, but series finales are a totally different game than season finales--much more emotional risk/reward in my opinion.  While I was emotionally and intellectually moved by both LOST and BSG's series endings (just check on my fanatacism in threads! ), I don't think I was as entertained as much while watching Spartacus'.

I think "Two Cathedrals" wins out in the end.  With a script like the one Sorkin delivered ("Well God, Jed, I don't even wanna know you), and his characters (only President Barltlet would curse at God, in latin, and in a church, and then butt out a smoke to spite him) , and the actors (John Spencer's "Watch this..."), and the Dire Straits playing over the final scenes, it's hard to beat.

Spartacus was jaw-dropping, though, and it certainly entertained me.  I've suggested the series to numerous friends, purely on the back of the ending (even though I loved the entire season).

That is too bad.  Thanks for sharing.  At Comic Con he talked about how great a role it was and how he was looking forward to coming back for it.  Video coverage here: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/302444/comic-con-2010-highlights-of-spartacus-blood-and-sand-panel-video

Just finished a marathon viewing session.  This was my second try based on TV Critic Mo Ryan's, formerly of the Chicago Tribune and now with AOL-TV, recommendation to stick out the first 2 or 3 episodes. Very glad I did.  The show really finds its footing character wise and then goes on to do some very surprising story developments.  And that finale!  Wow!  What a blood bath!

Hopefully the lead, Andy Whitfield, will be able to come back. Hopefully the second season will come to fruition at some point.
