Setup Assistance

Thread Starter
My current set up is:
TV: Samsung 52 inch LN52B530
Directv – HD DVR- HR23-700
Home Theater/DVD – LG LHB953

I have an HDMI connection between the Directv box and TV (HDMI1), and an HDMI connection between the Home Theater/DVD and the TV (HDMI2). I also have an digital optical connection between the Directv and the Home Theater/DVD. No HDMI input on the Home Theater.

The issue I have is that when I run a system test on the home theater, all 6 speakers work, but I can not get any sound from the rear speakers or the center when watching any shows or DVDs. I believe I have this wiring set up correctly and I have changed the option on the TV to use the external speaker.  What am I missing? Are there other options within the set up of the TV and the surround system?  I know the rears don’t put out a lot of sound, but I am not getting anything from them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey  I am sort of new to all of this stuff to but I will try and help out.

First DVD surround sound issue:  The first thing that comes to mind is check on the surround sound settings.  My receiver has multiple options (stereo, all channel, TV-direct, Dolby etc.) see if this is set right.  Also, check any menus for delay/vol adjustments for your surround speakers.

Second TV issue:  may be the same as above. but one thing I was sort of confused by is why is your Directv data not entering your home theater unit directly.  I am pretty sure that the HDMI cable carries both sound and video data.  If that is true then I could imagine that your Directv is sending all the surround sound info to your TV and not to your Theater unit.  The optical may be defaulting to stereo?

Hope this helps or at least gets someone with more knowledge to help out.

Since your LG home theater doesn't have any HDMI inputs, it sounds like you have everything hooked up correctly.

As Eric suggested - it's most likely a settings issue.

For the DirecTV, you may want to check the audio settings within its setup menu and make sure that it's set to output dolby digital 5.1 over the optical cable.  Since you're using HDMI for the video, the default settings may favor audio over HDMI, rather than the optical.

As for the DVD issues - have you made sure that the DVDs you've watched have had the 5.1 soundtrack selected from the movie's menu?

Eric's suggestion is a good one - if your reciever does have those various sound settings, or "modes" as they're often called, leave them set to "Direct", "Pass-Through" or anything else that sounds close to "Off".

Thanks guys.  You were right, it was a setting on the LG.  I had the audio set up to go through the HDMI.  I had to turn that off.

Thanks again.
