Jesse Stone TV Movies

Has anyone been picking these up? I have to admit that I was leery of these movies because I had never seen them before and I wasn't interested in getting wrapped up in another murder mystery series. However, I have to admit that this role had to be specifically created for him as I'm seeing a whole new side to Selleck's acting in this series.

Stone Cold, Night Passage, Death in Paradise, Sea Change and Ice Storm are the current releases and I have to say that these movies are really great.

With another movie in production, wrapping up the events that happened in "Ice Storm" I can't wait for more of these movies.

I've enjoyed the movies on TV and on DVD as well.  Selleck is great (even if he is older than the Stone of Robert Parker's books) and the supporting cast is always terrific.  I especially like William Devane as his shrink and Kathy Baker as one of his deputies.

FYI, kemcha, the fifth and most recent movie was called Thin Ice.  Just in case someone goes looking for it and can't find your title.

I was actually disappointed that Viola Davis wasn't cast in the last two films. I've enjoyed her work and she served as a good partner for Selleck's "Chief Stone." The one thing that drew me to the rest of the movies was the fact that Selleck's character was an actual flawed character. It adds a bit more realism to that character.

It's actually quite refreshing to find a character like "Chief Stone" who is more concerned with keeping the emotional stability of the people of Paradise rather than actually policing the residents. This series is a departure from the characters that he played on Magnum P.I. and Las Vegas. I'm just glad to find that Selleck has found a role that is perfect for him.

I do know that there are two Jesse Stone movies planned for 2010. No Remorse concludes the story begun with Thin Ice. Innocents Lost is also planned for 2010. I'm just waiting for Sony to release a sort of "Season 1" or "Collection 1" set.

The Jesse Stone Collection (6 films) is going to be $34.99 as one of Amazon's lighting deals from 9:30-1:30PT on 12/13.2010

Thought I'd post in here rather than start a new thread in the TV folder.

Still waiting for Thin Ice and No Remorse to be released by Sony on Region 2. But what did people think of the latest Jesse Stone film Innocents Lost (the seventh film), which premiered on CBS on Sunday night? In the fast national ratings (source: Zap2it) it got low demos again, but 13.7 million viewers for both hours.

No Remorse
Thin Ice.
These are intelligently written empathy-noirs shot like feature films by director / photographer Robert Harmon.
Each film is outstanding visually, aesthetically, and dramatically.
Better than the theatrical features I've been seeing.
Tom Selleck has lowered the timbre of his voice and is very, very good in them.

NOTE: The part-quoted post is post #5411 in the What's the last TV DVD you bought? thread.

Considering getting the Region 1 releases of Thin Ice, No Remorse and Innocents Lost, as it seems like Sony's Region 2 releases of the Jesse Stone TV films have stalled (Sea Change was released in February 2009).

I haven't seen Innocents Lost yet, but I've liked all of them (4 out of 5 stars) except for Thin Ice. That one felt flat and uninteresting. It's been a while since I watched it, so I can't remember exactly what it was, but there was something that was a part of the formula that was missing in that one. Oh well, I gotta add Innocents Lost to my Netflix queue....

The title may change, but an eighth Jesse Stone film is in the works called Benefit of the Doubt (source: IMDb).

Yes the 8th movie is indeed called "Benefit of the Doubt" and it is rumoured to be released in May 2012:

"Benefit of the Doubt" is announced to Air on May 20th on CBS. DVD has been following by about 6 months for previous releases.

From reading around the net, it looks like Selleck may take the Jesse series some where else, CBS lacks interest.

Very impressed with the Jesse Stone films so far. They're shot like features, and the cinematography is first-rate. I bought all seven DVDs and I'm sure I'll get the eighth when it comes out. I expect he'll get his job back in Benefit of the Doubt.

The score by John Beale -- or is it Jeff Beal -- is worthy of John Barry. That's a compliment.

The films are intelligently written and performed character-driven pieces in neo-noir mode. What I'd like to see next is a more bruising complex plot-driven crime-investigation. Let the characterization come out of that instead of putting it first.

Yeah, count me in as another big fan of these films (and the Robert Parker novels they're based on) -- my wife and I both look forward to the couple times each year CBS runs a new one, and agree that their feature-like production qualities are outstanding.

It was a wise call on Selleck and Harmon's part to not turn this project into a weekly series back when CBS offered it to them, several years ago -- I think they'd have hit a wall of diminishing returns at some point with the concept. That said, I also hope they're able to continue these elsewhere, if the network no longer wants to make them.

May decide to get Thin Ice, No Remorse and Innocents Lost on Region 1, as I have my doubts now Sony will release them on Region 1.

Very much hope Tom Selleck can take the Jesse Stone films to another network (or cable network) if CBS hasn't much interest. If the score is worthy of John Barry (CD soundtrack release?), that's very high praise indeed.

An obvious network for Jesse Stone is NBC, who could use a hit and do what CBS did when NBC canceled JAG after one season (CBS got 9 years of good ratings out of JAG, plus a little spinoff called NCIS).

For those who are interested, Benefit of the Doubt, the 8th Jesse Stone film premiers on CBS Sunday, May 20.

Many thanks Richard for sharing this US premiere airdate news for Benefit of the Doubt. cool.gif

How did Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt do ratings-wise this past Sunday night on CBS? Did it follow the pattern of previous Jesse Stone movies, very good ratings (total number of viewers) but low demos?

You are correct. It easily beat the competition in total viewers, but was third out of three in the demo
post #19 of 20
Follow up: there will be no more Jesse Stone movies, at least on CBS.

It will be a shame if some other network doesn't pick these up.

I love these movies but since I'm not in the 18-49 demographic I guess my opinion doesn't matter anyway. smile.gif
