The latest on Conan, Leno and NBC - Page 17

In relation to teh thread, though, it appears as though NBC's late night attacks on their host aren't all over.  I'm very interested to see how Jay rebounds, and to be honest, I'm kind of surprised they are running Conan repeats right now.

It was odd on Tuesday night--when ABC was spending the night premiering Lost--NBC decided it's best bet to counter-program was three hours of The Biggest Loser (one of those hours being a re-run from the prior week).  Jay was nowhere to be found.

I was watching some of Jay's last episodes and he looks tired and his eyes look closed. It doesn't show that he actually enjoys it, it's like he is doing his job.

He looks defeated....maybe deservedly so.

OK I would love to hear the story behind Leno being in the commercial/promo for Letterman's Latenight with Oprah.

You got that right, Adam.

The commercial was great, but I have a feeling the back story (whatever it is) is even better.

According to EW.com
Quote:

Late night fans got the surprise of a lifetime tonight by seeing Jay Leno sitting side-by-side with David Letterman in a Late Show promo during the second quarter of the Super Bowl. Appearing with Oprah Winfrey, Letterman laments about how boring the game was and Leno retorts “it’s because I’m here.” Minutes after the spot, CBS sent out word that the two late night stars taped the spot last Tuesday at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City. The spot was a revisit, of sorts, to a 2007 Super Bowl spot that featured Letterman and Winfrey. A Late Show spokesman said the spot was Letterman’s idea, and Leno and Winfrey were willing participants.

I can't imagine the two of them agreeing to be in the same room together.
I wouldn't be surprised if Letterman agreed to it.
Also wouldn't be surprised if it was cgi'd

I updated my post.  According to CBS they all agreed to it.

Wouldn't it be something if, during the second half, Conan showed up in another one?
That ad was quite a surprise. I'm surprised Leno did that, actually.

Amazing.  From Eric's link:

Quote:

The Leno camp got their bosses at NBC to sign off on the idea. NBC, per Burnett, not only approved, but let Leno take the NBC U jet to fly to New York on Feb. 2 to tape the spot. The network hastily decided to ditch the Feb. 2 edition of "The Jay Leno Show" to give Leno time to make the trip.

Despite the on-air drama between Dave and Jay, Burnett said the mood on the set during the roughly 30 minutes it took to produce the spot was not weird at all.

"There was nothing frosty or awkward about it," Burnett said. "These guys have known each other for a long time. I don't think either of them particularly care about these jokes that have been made."

It helped that both men had a "focus" for the time they were together. "They were trying to execute this joke," Burnett said. "So a lot of the conversation was about the spot."

I thought for sure the spot used CGI to have it appear that Leno and Letterman were on the same couch. Can't believe they actually spent time on the same set and I'm not really sure what was in it for either of them other than to get people talking. Seems especially odd that Jay would do a spot promoting the show he'll be back competing against in a couple weeks.

Probably the best marketing they could have done to promote him being back.
Yeah.  I don't think it's going to take Jay long to get back up-to-speed in terms of letting America know his "Tonight Show" is back in place @ 11:30.    Those people who are the potential audience will certainly know what's going on.

Imagine how ubiquitous those spots are going to be during the Winter Olympics coverage...

I think a better ad would've been Conan sitting there saying something like "I've got plenty of free time now" or "I certainly didn't have anything else to do".
I forget where I read it, but the best line so far is:

Conan coming back from the kitchen: (to Jay) Hey, I was sitting there!

which is just further proof that all of the jibberish that many of us have been going back and forth with was much ado about nothing.

all of us are taking sides on a race for which we have no dogs.  leno, letterman and conan are making their money and we are just pawns of their chess match.  just look at how many of us pawns are jaw jacking about how could leno and letterman possibly share the same room let alone share a couch.

gtfo.  it is just jokes folks.

Thanks for telling us all how to think. No matter what happens or has happened it doesn't change my opinion that Conan got screwed over by NBC and Leno stabbed him in the back.

Wait now... is it just jokes or are we all pawns? A very confusing post indeed. And I fail to see how this commercial constitutes proof of anything much less a devious chess match of which we are all the pawns. It's like you wrote the first part with a tinfoil hat on, took it off to go to the bathroom, forgot to put it back on, then wrote the last line and clicked submit.

Several of the recent posts are proof positive that comedy writing is a talent that few have.

I thought the commercial was laugh out loud funny and was not really surprised that Leno would agree to it considering the history. What I find interesting to think about is, would Letterman do a promo piece for The Tonight Show? Considering is personality, I doubt it.
