I'd love some suggestions for my first Home theater system.

Anyone have a good suggestion. I am looking to buy my first Home theater system,  possibly a box system.  I own a 42" 1080p Samsung Plasma and have Directv with a HD DVR. I want to spend enough to get good sound, but not break the bank. Also, I would like it to have a CD player integrated. Thanks for any help.

We need a budget.  Breaking the bank for you can be very different than breaking the bank for me.

Advice - listen to as many systems as possible.  Don't limit yourself to home theater in a box either.  Poor sounding speakers will fatigue your ears quickly.  Remember that most movies are at least 90 minutes.  Find something that you can listen to for much longer.  My wife and I have spent all day on a rainy weekend watching movies and never grew tired of my sound system.

99.99% of DVD players will play a CD.

Never mind, Robert_J beat me to the inevitable question, budget?  You may want to consider piecing your system together also if you're on a budget, this is what I have been doing and once I get finished building my subwoofer, I'll have quite the system for not much into it.  I have a total of $300 in my fronts, center and rear speakers and they consist of Yamaha NS555 tower speakers for fronts, a matching Yamaha center channel and Boston Acoustics Micro130x's for the rears.  I am very pleased with what my setup sounds like for the money I have invested.

Okay guys, I am willing to spend around $500, give or take.   I realize a component system sounds better, but can I build one for this price?

Dayton speakers & sub for around $230.00 shipped - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-696
Spend about the same on a good 5.1 receiver.  Check the For Sale section here for bargains.  Last year's models are always a great buy.
That leaves you with a little bit ($40) for a DVD player.  A good upconverting model from Wal-Mart will finish off the system.

Will this match a top of the line system?  No.  But it will be miles ahead of similar priced HTiB systems.  Calibrate it properly (Pioneer receivers have the MCACC system) and it will sound awsome.
