My first flickr images

I finally got off my butt and subscribed to Flickr and uploaded a few images. I just started so I merely uploaded a random sample of 5 pics I took. They aren't grouped into any sets yet. I'll reorganize them later. And I will upload more as time permits.

Please take a look and hopefully enjoy. I'd appreciate any comments/criticisms you may have about the photos as I'm always trying to learn to do better. Also, since this is my first time on Flickr (and any photo sharing site for that matter), I'd like any tips you have to offer on using Flickr better.

Now I have to come up with an avatar of some kind. That default one is butt ugly.

Bill you have a great sense of framing and color.  I love the NJ shot especially, the repeating lines of the clouds behind the ship give a great dramatic reinforcement of the ship.  Have added you as a contact, look forward to seeing more of your stuff roll in.

Thanks, Sam. I reciprocated and you're now my first contact. Congrats.

The clouds are a bonus. I had exactly one day to get shots of the ship. I took that after visiting the Adventure Aquarium. I was in Philadelphia just for a weekend. I flew in on Friday night and flew out Monday morning. So far it's the one and only time I've ever been in that area. I wish I had my polarizer filter with me. It would've improved that sky even more. C'est la vie.

A quick question for you pro users: do you upload your photos in jpg format or in TIF? Does it keep the TIF files for you for off-site backup storage? These I uploaded has high-resolution jpegs since I'm just starting out. But, wondering which route I should take if I decide to upgrade.

I added a few more random pictures. That should be enough to get me started for a bit.

I use the shrunk but archival size, so it cuts me down to like 2k.  JPG.  And I should make seperate uploads in SRGB but I print everything in ARGB so I don't bother, which makes my colors off on some browsers.  Flickr should be a last resort as an archival source, they add some funky sharpening and can add their own minor color shifts.

If you want to use a site like this for real offsite storage go to SmugMug.  I bought a pro Smug account for just that reason but can never be bothered taking the time to upload the full size images, so I just take a second hard disk every 6 months to my parents house.

Nice, I like the insects on the flowers - I've never visited a flower garden.  I should try and shoot pictures more locally - most of mine are from cruises.

In case your curious here's my link to flickr.

I have started an entirely new Flickr Account to just post my best pictures.  Too much of my stuff is junk interesting only to select family and friends.  When it is ready I will post the link.

Bill, it is all too easy to make a butterfly picture that is merely good, but THIS shot:

Is absolutely transcendent.  Nice work!  I love the colors you are able to pull out, they are a bit oversaturated but not too the point of distraction or being sappy, can you tell me what kind of processing you are doing?

Thanks, Sam. That means a lot to me. I look forward toward to your new account set.

All my pictures have very minimal processing. Usually it's just a white balance adjustment (if needed) in the Nikon RAW file (using the free Nikon ViewNX), then convert to TIFF or JPG and print.

I saw a tip in Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide (great book, by the way) where he says for outdoor shots to always use the cloudy white balance setting regardless of the actual sky. He claims that most shots will look dull and cool otherwise. I can't say that it's true 100% of the time, but I am finding more often than not I prefer the cloudy setting (or somewhere near it) than whatever the camera chose automatically. Generally changing this setting results in a warmer and more saturated picture without affecting the true colors much.

I can't recall off the top of my head if I changed this particular shot to cloudy, but I think I did. There were no other adjustments made.

I took a quick scan through, Brian. You've got some interesting shots. I especially like the cats.

Hey Bill, your "Fall Colors" photo of the autumn leaves is amazing.  You don't see colors like that so much living here in San Francisco.  Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much, Tiffany. I appreciate that.

Thanks,

The cats are what I practice on around the house :)  Most of the rest come from our cruises - now counting 3.  I'm working through the latest collection I took on our Panama Canal trip (which we just returned from) and posting them slowly.

Great shots overall. I really enjoyed them. You need to put up more asap :D

My favorite is the spider in the grape shot, but I would crop it differently. I tried to add a "note" on flickr to show the crop but it seems the option isn't there on your stream. Anyway, keep up the good work!

I only recently discovered there is a photography section on HTF and a HTF flickr site too! I'm really going to enjoy looking through all you guys stuff over the next couple days!

Thanks, Draucia. I'm rather happy how that one turned out as well.

Thanks, Marshall.

Yeah, I have the "add notes" feature turned off except for contacts. I'm not sure if I like allowing people to "edit" the image or cover it up with stuff. I'm fairly new to flickr, though, so I'm open to possibilities. I am interested to see how you might crop it, though. Can you post a crop in this thread?

I have some more shots to post, but I'm a tad behind in sorting through stuff. It'll be up there shortly, though.

Great shots and thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if I found the ones you intended to show.

I have an idea that you can do. I came across a site where there sell custom wall decals. You can crop the pictures and hang them on you wall and they would look painted on.

Just a thought.
