The way things are going I'd say that its very possible for "Avatar" to end up passing "Titanic".  With kids going back to school and everyone returning from their holiday vacations, the movie was still able to earn $8 million yesterday to bring its eight-day tally to just north of $360 million.  If the movie earns more than $40 million this weekend, I'd say that the domestic mark of "Titanic" will be in real jeopardy.  Publicly, Fox is saying a final domestic mark in the area of $550 million, but I have a feeling that they're confident about the movie's chances at challenging the $600.8 million haul of "Titanic".

The problem for me with the AMC near me is that it's a dump (the seats are falling apart, you can hear mice running around the floor if it's quiet enough and you never know if the person behind you is a raving maniac or planning on robbing you) and their selection is lacking at best (looking at their website, they currently have two movies that opened in the last month) so the AMC is basically a non-option for me.

For my area, I feel the Regal theaters are getting dumpier by the week, and their cheapest ticket price is $8 for show before the evening shows after 6 p.m. But I still have my Regalator refill cup ($1 refills) that saves me a little money when I go to Regal.

Good to hear Avatar bringing in another $8 million on its 3rd Monday!

what sort of boost did Return of the King and Titanic get from the oscars? I would think that an oscar bump might give Avatar enough additional legs to make the last 20 million and pass titanic (so I'm guessing it will top out at around 580).

Both "Titanic" and 'Return of the King' enjoyed 40% improvements the weekend following their respective Oscar triumphs.  Both films won 11 Oscars apiece.  "Titanic" had earned $579.4 million, while 'Return of the King' was sitting on a domestic mark of $368.2 million.

So I heard that Avatar just opened to sold out audiences in China.  I can't see it it not being number two all time worldwide now and maybe even have a chance to surpass Titanic.

I dunno, Avatar's losing steam over here, it only managed to rake in $7.33 million on Tuesday...
Only? The Dark Knight did $5.6m on that tuesday, Titanic $3m (granted not a good comparison). It was a less than 10% drop from Monday. As long as it keeps that pace, and has a good weekend, I would say things are still on course for at least breaking TDK's domestic record. It will be above $382m by the start of the weekend, and if it has less than a 30% drop that will be another $50m+ added. That weekend drop is going to be key.

My prediction is that it passes Dark Knight but not Titanic domestically, but that it becomes #1 internationally and is the first film to gross $2 billion worldwide.

I believe Patrick was being facetious.  And I agree with Brandon on the final results.

That's my guess too.

Is there a facetious smiley?
It will be #2 worldwide tomorrow or Friday at the latest. Plenty of steam!
If not then sure should be one.

Because there's less than $100 million separating #12 from #3 and "Avatar" is still grossing $7M or so per day and is expected to clear $40M again in its fourth weekend?
I think it might clear $50 million this weekend. Im seeing it again Saturday with 8 family members, including my parents who never go to the movies but want to see this.
so we're looking at another 2+ weeks before we know if it might target titanic grosses? but wait how long did titanic take to get to 600mil? didn't it take like 6months?

is it possible that avatar might even go far beyond that? 700mil?

Because nothing can stop Avatar..oh wait....except maybe The Lovely Bones.
With Avatar getting PGA and DGA nominations and with a great chance of grabbing one of the ten oscar best pic noms, it'll definitely get a boost.  However, $600M is still a long way to go.
From boxoffice mojo:

A little film called Avatar looks to cruise to its fourth consecutive weekend at number one as none of the new competitors look strong enough to unseat the Na'vi who will probably collect more cash than the three freshmen combined. Weekday grosses have been exceptionally strong even with the holiday season now over. Monday saw $8.1M, Tuesday dipped 10% to $7.3M, and Wednesday slipped only 6% to an estimated $6.9M. A 40% decline this weekend would give James Cameron about $41M which would boost the amazing cume to $422M by Sunday and break the record for the best fourth-weekend gross set a dozen years ago by Titanic with $28.7M. That would put Avatar at number eight on the all-time domestic list. The road ahead should end up with The Dark Knight losing its domestic spot at number two. The only question is which Cameron film will end up in that slot when the Pandora film ends its run.

Overseas, Avatar shot up to an eye-popping $760M on Wednesday and with $374.4M from North America raised its global haul to $1.134 billion which was enough to surpass The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to become the second biggest worldwide blockbuster of all-time. And it did it in a mere three weeks! Only Titanic is bigger with $1.84 billion from 1997 and 1998 when ticket prices were much lower. Regardless, James Cameron now owns the two biggest blockbusters of all-time, and neither is a sequel.

if Avatar wins best pic., that'd totally make my day because now that fantasy has won, SciFi needs to win just so it can prove itself ;0

The suits are going to be falling all over themselves to kiss the ground Cameron walks on when he starts work on his next film. "Horseshoes" Cameron sure has one deep pool of good luck.

How on earth is this luck?  He has taken TWO unrelated films, shot 11-12 years apart with completely different casts, in completely different genres, to the #1 and #2 spots of worldwide gross.  The first wasn't luck.  The second wasn't luck.  Both of them together are the opposite of luck.  Regardless of what either of us feel about the film, it is quite clear the man has a gift that Hollywood has coveted for a very long time.

That is not luck, that is skill.

But yes, the studios will certainly kiss the ring.  I imagine Cameron will only be meeting with the Presidents of the studios at this point.  What could a flunky say to the man?

And it's not like he had string of bombs before 1997 either.

While ticket prices are more, competition for the viewing dollar is more intense.  In 1997, the idea of "pirating" films was pretty obscure; DVD was still coming into its own.. now, lots of people are in the habit of waiting for something to come to the home screen.

So, I view this performance as something truly incredible in light of current market conditions.. and in this economy, almost doubly so.

Yeah, everything was supposed to kill movies.  Television, color television, the VCR (awesome testimony on that one), videogames, DVD, home theater, piracy, and the internet.  All would destroy the practicality of going to theaters.  Theaters are on their last legs.

Just like they have been for the last 70 years
