My HT died, need replacement advice

Not sure how it happened but plugging a power block that my projector was plgged into caused the outlet to trip the breaker yesterday. This in turn seems to have killed the power supply on my Infocus IN72 and either the DVI/HDMI cable or the DVI out on my Oppo DVD player. A call to Infocus had them quote me a repair cost of $378 + $30 shipping. Considering I only paid $450 for it brand new leads me to go the upgrade route instead. My budget is < $500 and I'd like to get a minimum 720p projector (figuring 1080p is beyond budget). I plan to upgrade to Blu-Ray in the near future. Will I notice a difference between 720p and 1080p since I'm used to 480p? Also what projectors would you guys recommend on this budget? Brands I'm considering (or hole to) are: Infocus Mitsubishi Optoma Panasonic Thanks!

have you checked out www.projectorcentral.com? pretty nifty site.

Also, as to size v. resolution v. seating distance, see http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter.

Excellent article. Based on my recent research I'm leaning towards the Optoma HD20, though st $1000 it's currently out of my budget. I'm hoping after CES in January that the prices will drop a little.

Less than $500 for a 720p projector? You'll have to go used. And that's normally a bad idea(unless you know the person), or can check it out in person(Craigslist).

I realized after I started researching that my budget would have to increase, especially going to a 1080p. I'm now pretty zeroed in on the Optoma HD20. any comments on that projector? Thanks

Not bad, but not great either. Read the reviews at Projectorcentral.com and Projectorreviews.com. A better choice will probably be the new Benq W1000($999). The reviews should be out very soon. There's a thread at Avsforum with a few owner's comments. I'm going to upgrade to the Benq or the Mits. HC3800.

Looks like the HC3800 is rated higher than both of the others, but st an extra $300. Can't find much about the Benq anywhere. Did it just come out?

Yes, the Benq recently came out. The few guys at Avsforum that have the Benq, really like it. Projectorreviews.com is expecting the Benq any day for his review.

I've been reading that thread and it seems like it's the front runner in the $1000 range. Too bad we won't see a price drop in January since it just came out so I may be without one a little longer than I'd like.
