During the last Home Theater Forum meet in Hollywood a Paramount executive told me that HGWT was still in their plans but they were looking at doing split seasons for Seasons 4, 5, and 6 and it appears that has come to pass.

3 and done for me.

 It's a must-buy from me too, even though i don't have the first 3 (still looking for a bargain price!). After all the handwringing, open pleas and angry dismissals, in honour of all those who were vigilant in demanding this - primarily to encourage more of this, especially during these times.

BTW, could someone details the problems with the first three releases?  Which ones has the chemical reaction problems with the cases?

No surprise here, they are going to air on ENCORE WESTERNS so new masters have been done up for the show :)

So hope possibly for Rawhide and Gunsmoke. Too bad for split seasons thou, its a half an hour show... But I'll take em any way I can Get em.

Check the underside of your discs, Dave--they may have a milky film on them if Scanavo (sp?) cases were used to house your DVDs.  Mine developed this and only after considerable cleaning with Windex (and case replacement) was I able to remedy the problem.  As I recall S2 and S3 were the worst.

i had no problems so far

Have the disk I own probably have that milky white film, never had a problem playing them thou

No problems either so far but it's odd they suddenly split up the remaining seasons, who makes these uncool decisions and more importantly why.

I seem to recall a batch of season 3 sets causing a lot of problems. Amazon was dumping them real cheap even though they all seemed prone to the issue. There were a lot of discussions on the boards on whether it was a disk manufacturing issue or a residue from the cases. I didn't get in on the special deal and ended up paying a pretty normal price for season 3.

My sets are around three years old. I did a quick check on them tonight and across all seasons I only have one case that actually has Scanavo printed on it. None of mine at this point have any visual issues.

I was told that it was a pricing issue. I believe that the first two seasons had an MSRP of $40 each and season three was $50. Paramount feels that it will be an easier sell if they can reduce the price by going split seasons. Of course, it remains to be seen what the price for a split season will be.

I also have had NO problems with the discs for the first three seasons.

Season 4 will be the first season of HGWT on DVD that has been digitally remastered. The other 3 seasons were taken from video masters and look substandard. Hopefully, CBS/Paramount will go back one day and remaster those early seasons. But given their current schedule of releases, that might be years and years and years from now...

All three seasons of HGWT on my shelf are packaged in "Nexpak" plastic cases.  Each time I check (every 4 months or so) all three seasons' discs are slightly cloudy, which indicates to me there is continual off-gassing.  That being said, here's some info I posted in January '08:

////////////////////////////////////

First, Kolchak: The Night Stalker is in slightly "filmy" slim cases with no brand name and a slight haze to the discs on the top sides (not the bottoms).

Second, Perry Mason S1 Vol 1 and Vol 2 are in slim/dual cases that also have a thin film on the inside. However, there's nothing on the discs (yet).

Third, the good news, Micro Center carries a 10-pack of dual-DVD slim/clear cases by TekNmotion (tm) which have no oil or film at all (so far). The package number is TM-DVD10S2CC. They run $7.99 for the 10-pack. I've purchased five packages at different times and each has been crystal clear and squeaky clean.

I thought I was through with "rot" problems when laserdiscs went the way of the Edsel and the 45 rpm record. I guess not!

//////////////////////////

The FUGITIVE S3 V2 had some cloudiness on Disc 4 when it arrived from Amazon last week.

I thought I'd wait to see what kind of cases HGWT S4 V1 comes in...and then match the first three seasons with the cases from Micro-Center in the spring.

It's always something.

Rod,

The shiny, more pliable, cases do appear to be slicker to the feel. I have noticed what could be consider a filmy substances on some. I always bought into the out-gassing concept over disk manufacturing issues. Whenever it comes up again I do a spot check but no cloudy look on any of mine. That's why I haven't replaced any of these cases yet.

If you are replacing cases I hope you are getting better pricing now then back then, That's 40 cents a disk. You can do much better online these days. Personally, I've been going with standard size cases that hold four disks each as a way to shrink down shelf space for older sets and questionable complete series sets. I just bought 50 for $32 shipped. That costs me about 16 cents disk.

Yes it great news to hear HGWT has come back to life and even though in the hated half season formate, I will buy it. I loved S1  and S2 but S3 captures video and sound were horrible grainy and any night scene was unwatchable . Goood  news S4 will be digitally remastered CBS has done nice work with the b/w perry mason seasons so I have high hopes for the video quality and please god no music track abortions like what happen to the Fugitive seasons. More fun classic tv.
