Anyone familiar with a yamaha Rx-V463 receiver I need help

I am trying to run my cable box and Xbox through my receiver and then out to the tv.  I have an hdmi out from my cable box into the receiver.  Then I have the composite cables out from the xbox into the receiver.  Finally, I have an hdmi out from the receiver into the t.v.  Ive read on these this forum that this should work. My problem is with the receivers input menu and audio selections. I cannot get this to work right. I can get a cable picture on my tv but no true surroud, or I can get the surround with no video. And I have yet to get the xbo picture yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the RX-V563, which is almost identical to the RX-V463.

Both models cannot convert or upconvert from composite to HDMI, and only display the on-screen menu over composite or component video (from the receiver to the TV).

I am not familiar with XBOX or XBOX 360, but if it has an HDMI option, you should go with that instead of composite.

I am very ignorant to all of this, but I beleive what you are saying is that if the xbox does not have hdmi then I will have to take that out to the tv.If that is so I will need to go back out from the tv to the receiver. Is it then still possible to get 5.1 from the xbox?

You do not have to remove the HDMI from the receiver to the tv. Your cable box is hooked up that way, so leave the HDMI from the receiver to the tv. For the Xbox, since you're using composite cables to the receiver from it, and it doesn't upconvert the composite to HDMI, you'll also need to run the yellow composite video cable from the receiver's "Monitor Out". to the tv.

You may need to go into the cable box's settings, and set the audio output to "Dolby Digital". You may also have to tell it to send the audio over the HDMI, as well as the video. I'm not sure. Look at the settings. If one doesn't work, try another one.
Then, in the receiver's setup menus, you may also need to tell it to use HDMI for video and audio. Again, not sure. Not familiar with your equipment.

Of course, if you're using the AUX inputs on the receiver, for the Xbox, you'll need to press the AUX button on the remote, when you want to play the Xbox, AND make sure the tv is set on the input you used on it, for the Xbox.

If it's an HD digital cable box, you'll need to use the "CBL" or "SAT" input of the receiver, instead of the TV input. Then, to watch cable tv, push the "CBL"/"SAT" button, and make sure tv is set on the HDMI input you used for the receiver. You can get a Harmony remote, and it will do all that for you. You'll just push one button for "Watch TV" or "Watch Movie".
Hope this helps some.

You can't pass 5.1 digital audio through the TV.  The digital out on the TV only outputs a 5.1 signal for over-the-air TV stations that run through its own internal receiver.  At best some sets will down-convert that to 2 channel stereo.  At worst you may get no sound at all.

Again, do you have an XBox or a 360?  Are composite video and analog audio really you're only options from the game system to the receiver?

Regards,

Joe
