I'm sure every post I start here makes someone laugh but none the less I need help again. In fixing one problem I have made myself another. My original problem was the sound of my surround system while watching tv was very poor.I have since found out that was due to me having my cable signal going in through the tv and then out to my receiver.I now have an hdmi ran to the receiver in and then an hdmi going out to the t.v.. Problem solved. Now, new problem, I have to have the receiver turned on all the time to watch tv.  Is there any way around this. I could deal with it but my it will drive my girlfriend, and in return me, absolutely nuts.

You can run another set of video and audio cables straight from the cable box, to the tv. Don't forget to turn the sound off, or all the way down, when you're going to use the receiver for sound.

Why would you want to use the tv speakers............ever?

No. The only way to use the set without having the receiver on is to have an HDMI cable running directly to the set. In that case, you would not get surround sound, only sound from your TV's speakers. Does your cable box have more than one HDMI output?

Ed Moxley is correct.  You can run an additional set of audio and video cables directly to the TV so that you don't need to have the receiver on just to "watch TV."   I would recommend component video cables for the highest-quality video signal and the regular stereo cables for sound.  You'll probably get the best price for those as www.monoprice.com or www.bluejeanscable.com.
