I need some Help!!! My Subwoofer for my onkyo home theatre system has blown. The amp is still good i checked that with a meter and also hooked up a speaker to it and it worked fine. I have checked parts-express and i can't seem to find the sub i am looking for. Here are the specs:
  • 10" driver
  • bass reflex enclosure
  • built-in 230-watt amplifier
  • 10-7/8"W x 20-7/16"H x 16-13/16"D
  • Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to be as cheap as possible to fix it. Thanks Guys!!

Thanks for the JL suggestion! I am looking to spend probably less than 100 or 150 because at the point i figure i might as well buy a brand new sub and box. Or should i just fix what i have?

Also, i am looking on parts-express' web site and i don't know if i need an 8 ohm sub or if i can go with a 4 ohm also do i need dual voice coil? Sorry im pretty new to the whole home audio stuff

Most drivers in powered subs are 4 ohms.  Check the back of the motor structure (magnet) and see if there is anything on it.

How do you know the driver is blown?  Have you checked the voice coil with a DMM?  When you gently press the cone in, does the voice coil rub?

If you want to replace it, then we need to know the air space of the enclosure.  Using your dimensions and assuming 1/2" material, you have about 1.7 cubic feet.  I'd use the Dayton RS 10" HO (part number 295-462).  You may have to enlarge the hole a little but that is easy.

I did not check it with a DMM but when i hooked another speak up to the same connection it worked and im not getting anything out of the sub so i am assuming it is blown. Is that wrong?

Check the DC resistance of the voice coil.  The other suggestions should be done first though.  You can get a good reading sometimes even though the coil has unwound inside the magnet gap.

The Onyko manual should have all the speaker spec information. Looking over there site, most of the speaker specs I looked at had were 8 ohm.

So, i checked the back of the sub box and it is a 8 ohm sub. What happens if i hook up a 4 ohm sub? I don't know what to buy really, anyone have any suggestions for a budget sub?

Have you tried contacting Onkyo for a replacement driver?  That would be the best way to go IMO, and they may be able to help!

Possibly something like this, see link below. I actually had a similar problem with an older Awia amplified subwoofer for a home theater system. I replaced it with one of these Kicker Comp subs and it worked great, actually better then the OEM one.

JL and Kicker aren't the be-all end-all of subs.  We choose products based on performance and value and those brands have neither in the home theater arena.

Call or e-mail Jacob for a quality 8 ohm sub for under $100 shipped - http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/index.php?/topic/30962-re-coned-si-bm-10s-blowout-60-shipping-each/page__st__30

Remember at this price, it is a value.  You aren't getting some of his top of the line subs:

Robert's the sub expert around here. If he says to get one, then get it  .

Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't make them crap.  Unlike JL, Kicker and Alpine they don't have the advertising budget.  On the other hand, that savings is passed along to the consumer.  Usually not in total price but in value.  Most of the budget subs from these small manufacturers are better than the top of line subs from the big guys.  Besindes Stereo Integrity, check out comments for Sound Solutions Audio, Fi Car Audio, AE Speakers, Exodus Audio, Ascendant Audio, Elemental Designs, Audio Pulse/TC Sounds, Incriminator Audio, Sundown Audio, Digital Designs, Cactus Audio, etc.  Wow!  I remembered a few.  These guys are enthusiasts.  They turned a passion into a business.  If you call JL, don't expect Manville Smith to answer the phone.  If you call most of these, the owner will answer or will be around to talk.
