I need help with my ht setup

I have everything functioning, but my guess would be not optimally. Here is what I have.
50' panasonic viera HD t.v.
Yamaha rx-v463 receiver(dolby prologic II, dts, 2 hdmi in, 1 out)
Explorer 4250 hdc digital cable box(one hdmi and one dig.audio out)

Xbox 360

Sylvania dvd recorder-player(component and s-video in and out)Its a peice of crap that i need to upgrade, any suggestions there would be great also

Here is how I have it connected.
I have the xbox connected to the tv via the component cables and to the receiver with optical audio(I think this is right)
I have my cable box connected to the tv with an hdmi and to my dvd recorder with component cables
Then I have the tv connected to the reciever with a component cable?red and white?not sure if thats what it is called.

Now i guess the problem is the way the tv is hooked to the receiver, the red and white i mentioned,or is it all wrong. The tv does have a digital audio out.  Should that go to the receiver?  Or should I run the cable box to the receiver first and then out to the tv? The main problem that I have is the volume of my system when using it while watching tv. I watch my dvds on the xbox and that  sounds great.  But anything on cable is considerably lower in volume. Also anything I record with my dvd recorder suffers the same way.I hope all of this is clear enough for someone to help me and I thank you in advance.

You should hook up everything through you Yamaha receiver.  I believe this model allows for upconversion through HDMI.   If you plug the XBox via component video to the Receiver and then the DVD player and Cable Box via HDMI.  You then use the HDMI out from the Receiver to the TV.  This way the Receiver is the brains of your operation and you do not have to fool with the inputs on the TV.  When you want to switch sources you do it only once on the receiver.  If you are upgrading your dvd player, I would go with the Samsung BDP 3600.  For $350 you will not only have blue-ray and dvd capability but you can use wireless or ethernet connection to access netflix, blockbuster, Youtube, and pandora radio.

The dvd recorder i have only has component and S video in and out so i really do need to upgrade that.  Is that player you speak of a recorder?  Im looking for an all in one recorder with 1080 upconversion playback.  I'm also concerned with the volume level of my recorded dvds.  Am I doing something wrong or should I just not accept much?   Also the xbox has component and optical audio out,do I use both or what?

Yes, keep the optical audio out to the receiver for the Xbox.  I am not sure what Recorder DVD is good, dont have much expierence with them.  Typically the newer recievers with HDMI do not give you the greatest audio when using optical and or coax digital audio anymore,  I assume it is because they do not spend the money on that DAC anymore.   You can use the super video or the composite video for now, the Receiver should up convert the signal through HDMI.  Having a good AV Receiver is key now a days.  Most of them will take all video signals and up convert through the HDMI as I believe the one you have does.  You can easily test this by hooking all the components up and having HDMI out from the receiver to the TV.  As far as the audio, digital is better then using analog (red for right, white for left), you can switch between the two but i am sure the digital will be of better quality.  As far as different volume levels, that is common between different sources (dvd vs cable box vs games).  Some A/V receivers like onkyo allow you to adjust the volume levels for each source so when you switch between the two you will get the same overall volume.  I find that Yamaha is slightly more powerful unit but a little more complicated to program and or calibrate.   I do not think Yamaha has the volume control to match sources, so its something you will have to deal with for now.  It should have a mic setup, so that you can atleast optimize speaker output.
