Digital Audio Out

I have a Samsung LN46B650 TV and use the USB connection extensively for playing movies.  Is there a way I can get 5.1 channel audio from the TV to a receiver?  There is a digital audio out, but it seems everything I have read says the port will only play 2 channel audio unless the source is over-the-air.  I have not bought a receiver yet because this is something I want to be sure will work before I buy.

Thanks,
Jeremy

The optical output on tvs is for 5.1 audio from the built-in tuner, from local HD channels, while using an antenna. It's not for a daisy chain connection, where everything goes to tv, then out to receiver. Those that pass audio that way at all, will downmix to 2.0, and send that to the receiver.

You will need a digital cable STB, satellite STB, or a tv tuner card card in your computer, with the digital outputs. You don't use any of those? Just curious..........why buy a high def tv, if you're not going to use a high def source?
Good luck!

I'm not sure I explained it clear enough.  There is no daisy chain connection.  There is a USB port on the TV from which I have connected a USB hard drive.  I play the movies directly from the hard drive on the TV and would like that to be in 5.1 audio.  Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Not that I know of. The hard drive would need a digital output, to go to a receiver. I've not seen a hard drive with a digital output..........

You mentioned the optical out on the tv, and asked if there was a way to get 5.1 from the tv (not the hard drive) to a receiver.

That is why I mentioned the daisy chain connection.

Alright, I guess I wasn't sure what you meant by daisy chain.  So no way to do it...that sucks.  If they have a way to play music, movies, etc. direct from a USB port, you would think they would have a way to play in 5.1 audio.

Perhaps you should contact Samsung and run your lack of 5.1 audio problem to them and see what they have to say.

From what you are trying to do it sounds like you need a Media PC to handle your video and audio signals.
