Just took the plunge! ("Star Trek: Voyager" #1) - Page 2

I would say don't give up on TNG at least until you get to season 3, which many consider the best.

I think you're making the right choice with Voyager.  It's my 2nd favorite, after TOS.  I really wanted to like TNG but just couldn't get over several *major* factors that 100% ruined it for me.  I struggled through the first season, started S2 and gave up.  I'd resample occasionally during its' run but the old problems were always there.  I felt that DS9 was *far* better than TNG, but there were still issues that kept me from being a regular watcher.  Voyager was like a breath of fresh air.  While I had initial concerns about Neelix, he wasn't as annoying as I was afraid he would be.  Yes, there are stinker episodes, but I challenge you to find *any* Trek series that doesn't have its' fair share.  I've liked what little I've been able to see of Enterprise and currently rank it 3rd.

Thanks very much. Yes, that's the confirmation I was looking for. Based on what you said, I may give the so-called "stinkers" (like "Favorite Son," for instance) at least a try to see if my opinions of them match up with what other people said. I may not like them, but then again, maybe I might. "Macrocosm" (from #3) was one of those that was very much panned, but I saw it a couple of times, and I thought that it was a great episode.

By the way, I agree about "TNG." I purchased the #1 DVD release of that to try it out, and I'm 9 episodes short of finishing it, but it'll take a while for me to finish. I must admit that I've never been the biggest fan of Picard (and, by comparison, have very much enjoyed what I've seen of Janeway), but as the old saying goes, "to each his/her own." Besides, "Voyager"'s packaging is a whole lot better than that of "TNG."

TNG doesn't get going until season 3.

Seriously. If you've never seen TNG, buy season 3 first. You're not really missing much, except the debut of Q and the Borg. But, that is all explained when it's time.

I was always a TNG fan, but I didn't go back and buy seasons 1 and 2 until later on. S3 is when to start watching. 3-7 are the best of the series.

This is my ranking of the series

Star trek the orginal series and DS9 are tided for 1st place in my mind.  Voyager 2nd place, Enterprise 3rd  and Star trek No Good, I mean politically correct , I mean next generation dead last (Im sorry but watching NG's cheesy special effects and excessive P.C. make a child of 80's and ages badly like St elsewhere does) . Thats my 2 cents

Wow, Bob, I have to disgaree with your assessment of TNG. I thought it was terrific, although it came off the tracks in later years. Seasons 6 and 7 had a lot of reset button-pushing, although I found both very worthwhile overall. I also think TNG was the closest to Gene Roddenberry's vision for the show, his original concept. I don't think it was as good a series as DS9, which is probably my favorite along with TOS. Enterprise - now that I have viewed it again in whole on DVD - is probably tied with TNG. I liked it much more than I did the first time. That experience makes me think I should rewatch Voyager, which I absolutely loathed for seven years it was on (I managed to tune in every week). I thought Voyager had a great pilot and really showed promise, but I don't think it fulfilled one bit of that promise.

^And that's what makes Trekkies such a diverse group!  We all have a different take on the various series.  I'd list why I *hated* TNG but it really doesn't matter to anyone but me and my major complaints seem to be what others seem to like so much.

If I ever manage to re-watch Voyager I *may* reconsider my opinion of that one, but it's doubtful.  My opinions of Trek series tends to stay firm once I've seen enough to form one.  I only saw Voyager during the original run and missed final season as it did not air where I live.  I worked for a broadcaster up until the final season and put it on the record schedule even though we did not air it.  I'd take the tapes home and watch at my leisure.  I've managed to avoid any/all discussions on that season so I don't know how the series ended and as such don't know if the "promise" was fulfilled.  This is in part to the overall reception by fans since don't seem to like it and just don't discuss it much other than "I (fill in the blank) Voyager" or "marginally better than Enterprise". In a way, this is good 'cause so many series that need resolution have truly horrible conclusions that jump so many sharks it's laughable.  But, in a way I really want to see how it was all wrapped up.  I'm sure I will some day, but it won't be high on the "must see" list until season prices drop to a point that I'll seriously consider making a full series purchase.  It came close this year but I'd already spent *way* too much on other DVDs and there just wasn't anything left in the kitty.

"Voyager"'s packaging is a whole lot better than that of "TNG."

Bob,

I don't really care for the North American packaging of VOY.  I do like the TNG packaging, however.  I bought the first season of VOY and then returned it because I discovered that the British packaging was far superior.  But the British torpedo boxes are becoming somewhat rare to find these days, at least at a reasonable price.

Sorry Sam  for me  barely 40% of NG's the episodes hold up for me. Channel 5 here is So Cal is re running NG (mon- fri 1230am)  the acting and writting was very very up down ranging from brillant  to horrid frrom night to night  . Due the poor writting Westly Crusher (and saddly the actor Will Wheaton still gets boo off convention stages) is most hated characters/actors in star trek history (excessive and abusurd number westly to the rescue episodes due to pee poor writting staff) . It trashed his wheaton's career and was written out of most of NG motion pictures because he was consider fan posion . Berman made the show a prisoner of 80's with excessive P.C. , vailed attacks on religion, (ironically) capatialism ,  reagan era policys , and most ironically science . Its in my book the weakest in the of star trek series.  Yes the only thing that save the series for me was the do over in the last three years where berman had less to do with the series . I give last 3 years a  C grade, years 1 thur 5 a generious D. Sorry

I've enjoyed most all of the Trek series to date, being an original fan from back in the '60s.  The modern-day incarnations all had their plusses and minuses.  TNG had to find its way after a rough start from the old Roddenberry regime, so its early episodes have that dichotomy of being pulled in two different directions.  DS9, VOY, and ENT all had relatively good starts to them, with the foundations of TNG already in place as a guide.

I've purchased and enjoyed the TNG discs, as well as the DS9 discs, but hadn't taken the plunge yet on VOY or ENT in the DVD format.  I still have them all on VHS tape somewhere, but through bad labelling habits and residence moves, God only knows where any given episode might be.

So for Christmas, I asked Santa for a couple of VOYAGER seasons that we saw in Walmart recently.  The price was good so I figured it was time to also take the plunge, as our original poster claims.

Just last evening we watched the pilot, "The Caretaker."  Ironically, that episode is the only one I owned in any kind of digital format as it appeared on an old Captain's Collection LaserDisc set.  But we watched it anyway, and now look forward to seeing the rest of seasons one and two in their hour-long episodes.
