Just took the plunge! ("Star Trek: Voyager" #1)

I just took the plunge and purchased #1 of "Star Trek: Voyager." As a matter of principle, I don't usually watch '90's television, but I remember having seen the component outings in this release numerous times on WHNS FOX-21 (now FOX Carolina), and I really enjoyed them. I'm thinking that this is going to pan out as well in entertainment value on DVD as it did on FOX Carolina.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Star Trek Voyager: Seasons 1-7
Star Trek Voyager - The Complete Seventh Season
Star Trek Voyager - The Complete Sixth Season

Do you have Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?

DS9 was the better show, IMO.

Also, IMO, Voyager didn't start getting good until season 3 or 4. When the Doctor got a bigger part, the show became better. When Seven of 9 came onboard for the Doctor to play off of, the show became better.

And the skintight catsuit didn't hurt, either.

I don't have DS9, and I'm not sure about getting it either. I saw a little bit of one outing, and I thought, "This is not for me."

I tried out my #1 "Voyager" purchase, and there are at least two good outings in the form of "Learning Curve" and "The Cloud." I'm seeing it out-of-order, because as I said, I remember having seen the component outings numerous times.

BMasters,

I think you're in for a treat, regardless of which season you begin with. Enjoy the series -- it's a lot of fun.

BTW, Time and Again, Eye Of the Needle, and (esp.) Learning Curve are some of my favorite episodes from the first season of VOY.

When I said I'm seeing it out of order, I meant that about the episodes on this DVD release. But you're right about seeing the series overall out-of-order as well. That said, the tip is much appreciated.

Ignore the naysayers and decide for yourself how good a show it is (which it sounds like you are already doing).  I'm watching in order and just finished the first disc of season 5 yesterday.  I'm having a good ol' time.  Of course, I've seen it through twice before this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Voyager was a bad show, just that most people (myself included) think DS9 was the best of the 90s Treks.

Also, s1 and s2 of Voyager were pretty good, but the show didn't really start firing on all cylinders (for me) until S3 or 4.

That's no major problem, because TNG and DS9 were the same way.
I wasn't really referring to you, but when Voy or the Star Wars prequels are mentioned, it usually turns into pro/con theads.  DS9 was my favorite by far, but I'll go againt CW and say I prefer Voy to TNG.

You have to be insane. Them is fightin' words.

In all seriousness enjoy Voyager. It was written, acted and produced well. But realize that you are now going to have the buy the rest of the series. And then when you are done with Voyager do yourself a favor and get DS9.

IMO, TNG aged badly.

The best TNG episodes are some of the best of Trek. But a lot of the series is mired in that 80s, touchy feely, political correctness where everyone has to talk their feelings out, and Picard is more than likely to say "Stop! Or I'll say "stop" again! Counselor, do you feel they are going to stop? No, Mr. Worf, we are not going to fire on them, even though they have already wiped out the schoolroom and sickbay, we will talk to them first! I'm sure with some discussion, they will stop, and apologize profusely for obliterating the children and the wounded. Mr, Data, have they stopped yet?" than to actually fire weapons.

But that's just my opinion.

I never thought it was, either. Apparently, you preferred DS9; that's not a problem, because my motto is "To each his own." That's why they make chocolate and vanilla. There are those who like chocolate, those who like vanilla, and in some cases, those who like both of them. There are also those who don't like either of them, and that's fine by me, too.

I endorse this message.  I think it's a show that I enjoy when I'm watching it, but it doesn't sit that well in my memory.  It's so stodgy and PC.  Captain Sisko is my kind of captain.  When I started my current run through Voyager, I thought I'd hate Janeway and that she made Picard look like Kirk, but I've warmed up to her.  She makes decisions I disagree with all the time, but she's still got a little more steel than Picard.

Again, I should go back and rewatch TNG.  I might change my tune on it.  Sitting through it right now sounds like a chore.

WTF is a component outing?
Perhaps he means the individual episodes, just not in order.

You guessed right! You're very perceptive.

I'm doing something interesting; I've gotten one of "TNG" and one of "Voyager." The thought process in this is that whichever one holds up the best to me, that's the one I get more of, and so far, "TNG" seems to be holding up better than "Voyager." "TNG" is also better packaged, and that packaging is something that I would list as among the best.

I have to disagree with everyone concerning Voyager.  Season 1 had its fair share of good and decent episodes. But, I think the series started getting better with the second season. Voyager Season 1 had some good episodes such as Parallax, Time and Time Again, Prime Factors and Learning Curve. However, I thought the best episode that first season was faces, which showcased B'Elanna Torres in which her human and Klingon halves were separated into two versions of herself. It was a touching episode.

Season 2 opened up with the crew finding Amelia Earhart and it was a very good episode.

Ben,

I fully agree with you regarding the packaging of TNG -- definitely among the best of the North American packaging.  But the European packaging of VOY (and of DS9) is superb.  I bought all seven seasons of both VOY and DS9 from either England, France, or Germany (most from Amazon France and Amazon Germany).  And as I've mentioned a few times, the special features on the European sets are not identical to the special features on their North American counterparts.  But to me, the packaging was the primary reason I purchased the sets overseas.

Mark,

I loved the second season as well.  As for the first season, I wasn't crazy about Faces.  This was mainly because I thought the acting of Torres (or rather, Dawson -- whom I like very much) was quite poor in that episode.  Somethng grated against my nerves when she was playing those two roles.  But the episode is still watchable.
The thing is that the actress who played her, Roxanne Dawson (I think) was thrust into the spotlight and it was one of her first major roles. The series was also new to a lot of these actors and that episode was a very character specific episode. The same problem happened with Neelix in the episode "Phage."

Count me in as one who prefers Voyager to TNG. Voyager was my first experience of Trek as an adult and I got hooked by renting a double episode from Season 1 with an episode about them finding dead bodies on asteroids or something like that (Emanations ??)

Didnt start TNG until after I finished Voyager and DS9 and couldnt get into it - gave up after Season 4. i like the TNG films and thing Picard is great but thats it really.

always had a thing for Janeway for some reason :) Saw Kate Mulgrew do a talk once and she was fantastic.

As a Voyager fan though, DS9 is hands down the best of the Trek series. Theres speculation about the effect that Babylon 5 had on DS9 and its move from episodic to whole season arcs but Seasons 3-7 of DS9 had me completely hooked.

The Neelix episode from season 4... Mortal Coil, was a way better Neelix episode (IMO).

At least two of those that you mentioned, I'd have to agree on (namely, "Prime Factors" and "Learning Curve"). A couple of the best parts, one of each: in "Prime," when Janeway tells Torres in a very low voice (paraphrased), 'mess up again, no matter how minor, and you'll no longer be an officer here,' and in "Learning Curve," when Chakotay lays down the law for Dalby concerning the latter wanting to do things the Maquis way by suddenly punching Dalby in the corner of his mouth and saying (again paraphrased), 'if you want to keep doing things that way, we will, tomorrow, the next day, ad infinitum, until you and the others get your behinds back in there and submit to Tuvok's training.' That took steel, I'd say.

That "Dalby," as I like to call that left hook, was a wonderful scene (Learning Curve).  It really set the record straight where Chakotay stood, and I got goose bumps watching the way he handled Dalby (after he made sure Dalby wanted to continue doing things the Maquis way, of course).

It looks like "Voyager" is going to win the race. I'm about 4.5 episodes into "TNG," and already I'm agreeing with that one poster who said that it aged badly. That, however, does not mean that I will not try to finish what I have of it. But still, "Voyager" will be the one that gets more presence in my lineup.

Glad to see someone is enjoying Voyager... just kidding ;)

Like you said  different strokes for different folks. I initially found Voyager by far the weakest of all the shows & for the longest time I would try to not even acknowledge it existed. For some reason that was my reaction to the show when it was first on the air. I just did not like it at all!

But, I finally got over that and brought myself to start watching it again. As I had been just craving to see some new Trek (in TV series format, where it plays the best) & for the most part Voyager is new to me having given up on it early on. It is much better than I remember it being. I actually kinda even like it. It is starting to grow on me. I would still rank the series DS9, TOS, TNG, ENT, VOY. But, who knows by the time I get up to some of the better years, it may wind up moving up my rankings.

The trouble is, however, I'm scared to get either #2 or #3 because of what, it has been said, were two of the worst episodes in "Trek" history: "Threshold" and "Favorite Son." #1, I'd say, had more hits than misses. However, I still may change my mind about getting any more. I'll have to think about it, to be honest.
What are you talking about? Voyager #2? Voager #3?

If you're referring to Season 2 and Season 3, there were a lot of good episodes in both of those seasons. While there may have been a few bad episodes in each season, it's fairly easy to pick up any season set from any television show that you like and mention a few episodes which weren't all that great. I was fortunate enough to purchase all seven seasons of Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Deep Space Nine. I have to tell you that Star Trek Voyager remains my favourite, right behind Star Trek Enterprise.

If you're fortunate enough, you should be able to find Voyager Season 2 at your local Walmart store for $40.

In which case, he would be a ... Fortunate Son.  It seems as though I have crossed my Threshold for puns at this time.

Okay, I'll leave now.

Aryn,

Your rankings are very close to mine.  My favorite series in rank order would be TOS, TASDS9, TNG, ENT, and VOY.  But I like all of the series.  It's really just a matter of degree for me.

Didn't find #2 at the Wal-Mart, but I did find #3, so it's probably just as well. It has, I think, some of the best outings that the series has ever had (at least in my opinion), like "Fair Trade," "Macrocosm," the two-part "Future's End," etc.
