Will this HTPC work for HD playback?

Thread Starter

I recently picked up this HTPC off of ebay for like 65 bucks.  Is this sufficient to use mediacenter to play back music/hd movies and shows without any skipping?  I will hook it up to my network hardwired.

I appreciate any feedback.

Hard to say until you try it out. I would think it should be sufficient to play DVD's and music fine.  How will you be playing back "HD Movies"?

Haven't been able to try it out yet..I need to add a hard drive to it.

I would be playing back some .mkv 720p max files

For HD playback you are probably going to need at least a dual core CPU with 4G of RAM.

I think for that sort of HD Playback you may need a different video card. With Nvidia and Pure HD, they design the GPU to handle all the processing required of HD content so the CPU doesn't have to do it. It doesn't hurt to try it as is, but worse case scenario you may need a $70.00 video card and a 300-400 watt power supply.
