I'm upgrading / replacing the system in my camper. It came with a crappy all-in-one receiver/DVD player, it does have a remote sub mounted in a small cabinet and 5 speakers mounted in the ceiling. Space is also at a premium as I really only have room for 2 boxes. I would like to have my Sat receiver and X-box located in the cabinet and move the amp some where else.....remote :-) maybe down with the sub. Right now the X-box is located behind the TV and you have to pull the TV out to access it.

I've found the bose lifestyle system or even better the bose cinemate system:

is exactly what I want, this way I could just mount the sub/amp module out of site and only have a small box located up top to receive the audio signal and remote control signals. I'm using the TV to switch between sources and it has an audio out that could feed the amp.

My problem with the bose system is two folds: the price and the price vs. quality issue. I've listened to and installed several bose systems for friends and honestly they sound pretty decent to me, but nothing that can't be reproduced for less than half the money.

All the usual suspects like Onkyo or harmon kardon are just way too big. I think I would even be satisfied with a simple multi-channel amp much like used in whole house speaker systems, but I want to keep the surround sound feature and not go to a "mono" signal where all speakers get the same signal. I have plans to replace the in ceiling speakers later, but don't really want to spend the money on it right now. I would just like an amp that I can build from.

Thanks for your help, and I hope I didn't skip over something in the FAQ that would answer my questions.
