I saw this movie in thew seventies when it originally came out. And yes, it's been hacked to death. It's in real need of a makeover. I wish some of the technical people here at the forum would talk about the aspect ratio that I remember seeing, not in the pan and scan version I own. It's really I sad state of affairs because this movie was so ahead of it's time. And this movie really became the impetus for "War Games." Well, at least MGM got that anniversary issue right.

I saw this film during it's first run in scope in a theatre and again in widescreen on a United Airlines DC-8 flight from Los Angeles  to Honolulu many years ago when the airlines were using 16mm films for their inflight movie service instead of video tape. Yes, I agree Universal should do it right and issue the movie in it's original aspect ratio hopefully in both Blu-Ray and DVD.

Universal will probably wait for the announced Ron Howard remake to come out before they even consider revisiting this.

At least the Laserdisc version was letterboxed.

If a re-issue of this doesn't happen when the Ron Howard remake is drawing near, perhaps they will consider putting it (and ICEMAN and a few others) out as part of their VOD program.

I found the laserdisc for this film as a Double Feature with Silent Running at a Half Price books about a month ago for 5.00. It is really odd the original DVD release wasn't in widescreen, seems really odd.
