Black Friday 2009 sales thread (DVDs/BDs/videogames/HDTVs/players)

Thread Starter

I've tried to cull just the HT-related items (and included some videogame consoles and titles) for this list of Black Friday sale items from various retail stores.

If you feel like staying home, be sure to check online sites, like Amazon who should be aggressive in matching most online deals, but there will be online deals to be found, just have to scour for them.

Wal-Mart is pretty good for price-matching other retailer ads if you bring them the sales circular and it's a direct match item-for-item (product numbers when possible).  Some people do all their shopping at Wal-Mart and have them price-match all local competitor ads.

Bear in mind that there may be regional differences in the prices listed here and in the sales ads published in your area.

Here are the Black Friday deals:

No 52-inch or larger TVs on sale?  Guess I'll sleep in, then spend the rest of the day seeing how much longer my 13 year old CRT can last :)

My "Plan of Attack" is as follows for "The National Day of Insanity":

4:00 AM - Get the FREE Snowglobe from JC Penney

5:00 AM - Get Season 12 of The Simpsons and Season 8 of Smallville from Best Buy

6:00 AM - Get Season 4 of House from Target

7:00 AM "Mop Up" at Wally's and Sammy's (They're next to each other where I live, Sammys will have a FREE Breakfast.)

Regulus -- if you are looking to get Season 1-4 of House  go to Best Buy starting today -- they have the seasons for the same $12.99  (and dont have to deal with the insanity).

If you are looking for Season 8 of House at Target you are going to be waiting in line for about 3 years since they are only currently on Season 6  -- LOL

Thanks Patrick.  It's nice to have all this info in one place.  I'll see if my daughter can pick up Braveheart at WalMart and/or Gone with the Wind at Target.

I get to work my first Black Friday at Wal-Mart his year (yaaaaah!) and it should be very fun. (yaaaah!)

Anyways, after my shift is over, I'm thinking of picking up if still available:

PS3 120 Gig Bundle Pack including PS3, Dark Knight-BD, Infamous and Arkham Asylum - $299
Sony Bravia 46'' LCD 1080p - $798

Can anyone recommend these two items or give a better suggestion? Perhaps a different TV?

Thanks

They are likely wrong unless they tend to watch all their stuff in very brightly lit rooms -- or play loads and loads of video games or like the rather digitally video look of many/most of them.

Problem w/ the lightning-style deals spread across the entire week is we won't be able to get free shipping on them unless we happen to have one or two other items we want at the same time.  Guess I should maybe start looking for items I would actually want to buy anyway to go along w/ any such deal.

So far, the listing there doesn't look *THAT* interesting (for Bluray anyway).  But I guess they will probably end up putting out all the titles listed in this thread, if not more, if they're serious about one-upping all the other stores.

Thanks for the heads up, Chris.

Do your friends actually own Plasma and LCD TVs? Or are they "reviews" from browsing the big box stores? As Man says, comparing TVs at a Walmart or BestBuy can be very misleading in how they would actually compare at home.

How do these "Lightning Deals" work? Are they one-day sales, or do you have to buy them within some short period of being posted?

After working for Target for 18 years, you have my sympathy!
On the flipside, I now work at Starbucks on the perimeter of our mall and I will be opening at 3am on Friday to caffeinate all the Black Friday shoppers!

And I will pick up Snow White on Wed after work.  Does anyone know if Disney will be doing the same thing with Up (releasing a full special edition standard DVD a few weeks after the combo pack)?  Just don't have plans to upgrade quite yet...

Eric:

I full endorse the concept of those DVD/Blu-ray combo packs that Disney's doing.

When that day comes you take the plunge and decide to upgrade, you'll already have a few Disney classics ready-to-go and won't be put in the awkward (and expensive) position of re-buying these titles yet again.  And amazon has had some TERRIFIC pre-order deals on the Disney combos.

To answer your question about a DVD-only release of Up, I haven't heard.

They released a 2 disc DVD set of Up the same day as the one disc DVD and the Blu-ray. Even if you don't have a Blu-ray player, the Blu-ray was the one to go with because it was cheaper than the 2 disc DVD and you got all the special features.

D'oh!    I knew that!

I've really got to take the trouble to read those RoundUps more carefully...

Near as I can tell (and recall from last year), they should probably work just like the Lightning Deals you already see in your Amazon Today's Deals page (in the upper-right section w/ different deals for different time periods throughout each day).

IOW, you won't be able to make use of such deals across different groups/periods to make one combo order.

Here's where my Amazon Prime could pay off!

BTW, I picked up one of the Dynex 32" LCDs at Best Buy and it is a decent TV.  One thing to be aware of, there are actually three models at that price and 2 of them have no digital audio output.  I was amazed.  I mistakenly got one of those at first.  So, if that is important to you and you are considering that deal, be certain to get the one with 2 hdmi inputs (and "130" in the middle of its model number) instead of three.  The digital output was far more important to me than the extra hdmi.

This TV is not suitable for use in my good HT.  From what I've seen, no LCD will make me happy with the black level, but it will be great in the living room.

The Walmart sale on the 19 inch Sansui is actually tempting for the kids rooms.  I can get rid of the tube t.v.s and hang em on the wall.

The best deal I've seen is Walmart's Infamous/Batman/Batman + the PS3.  If you don't have a PS3 yet (and you should!) this is the way to go.  Shop around for the amazing BlueTooth  Remote and you've got a great start right there.

I'm hoping for some unannounced sales on the Pansaonic BD80 Blu Ray. I missed the good prices on it last week, so I'm now waiting impatiently for some killer Christmas price drops.

Scroll down to the Movies section.

Dave, thanks but that's not what I'm looking for.  The ad says there are over 30 to choose from, but they only show a handful.  I'm looking for a complete list of all the movies, if there even is one.

Yes, you *can* take advantage of deals across groups/periods for combo orders.  I've done 2 so far.  One yesterday and another today.

As far as how they work... they changed the rules a bit after the Dell Laptop Lightning Deal debacle and now a Lightning Deal *can* go OOS even if you have it "claimed" and you'll not get it.  So waiting across time periods (or even a few seconds) can be chancy for "hot" items as they could sell out before you check out with your "deal".  Basically it's now just like a Gold Box deal but you *have* to have "claimed" it before you get the special price.

I think it's really lame and just a bit unethical for them to do it this way now.  It's like going to BB/WM/OM/etc. early on BF, getting that coupon for the laptop/TV/etc. and then when you go to pick it up mid-morning (but before the cutoff) they tell you "sorry, we've sold out and you don't get one".
