Building a HT Piece-by-Piece: Receiver

Hi guys,

Looking for suggestions for a receiver. Currently system-less, but looking to build a 5.1 HT system. The receiver will be my first purchase, but I'll likely purchase a set of front speakers around the same time I buy the receiver. I will probably end up buying Axiom/SVS/Paradigm front speakers for purpose of disclosure.

In the receiver, I'm not looking for a DVD or Blue-Ray player. Just a basic receiver that can support good, quality speakers. It needs to support an HD cable box with HDMI output, and an Xbox 360 with the component outs and optical sound. I'd like to have an additional HDMI input (total of two) on the receiver, and an HDMI output (of course). It would also be nice if the receiver would scale up the component input from the 360 to HDMI. Anything else that I am missing?

I would like to keep it under $500. Any suggestions are welcome - thanks all.

So I am going to be going with the SVS STS-01 towers, SCS-01 center, and either the SCS-01(M) or SBS-01 surrounds. I have a no-name sub that's very old which I may or may not use, depending on how good the towers do at providing the necessary bass. I also may end up purchasing a new sub, but that's a little ways down the road.

Any ideas for receivers? It seems like I'd be best sticking with a Yamaha or Onkyo. Need the HDMI inputs and optical sound input for my Xbox, and of course an HDMI output (upscaling is preferred). I am truly clueless here. Thanks!
