Replacing some old KLH speakers. New to the Forum.

Hello.

I'm new to the Forum. I would like some help.  I'm looking to replace some old KLH SS02 speakers I got in high school. I've had these speakers since  2003, they were 35 bucks so that's why I got them. I'm looking to improve the sound quality of my HT.  I don't have much room for speakers towers. I've read that people like the energy take classic 5 speakers. I use my HT for music, movies and video  games no TV.

Does anyone have these speakers, are they good as cnet.com says they are?
Would the jump from the speakers I have now to Energy take classic 5 would be worth it?
Should I be looking at a different set of Speakers? Budget is about 400.
Or Should I replace my Pioneer vsx-d514 receiver for the sound Quality Boost I'm looking for?

Thanks for any help  that can be provided.

Speakers will give you the best improvement in sound quality.  I can hook up my old Pioneer I bought at Wal-Mart in1992 and it will sound very good with quality speakers.

What speakers are better than your $35 speakers?  Almost any.  What configuration are you looking for?  Stereo?  5.1 surround sound?  A combination like a 2.1 or 3.1 system?  I'm not familiar with that KLH part number and I'm too lazy to Google it.

All I cared about at the time was getting five satellite speakers at 8Ohms and 100 watts a piece. I found the set on amazon marketplace for 35 bucks and they had the rating I wanted. So i got them.  Right now I have a 5.1 setup. So I'm looking for a 5.1 or maybe even a 7.1

Here is the link for the Specs of my current speakers.

If you budget is $400, then I would stick with the 5 speakers.  Don't spread your money thin by going with 7.  Are you keeping your sub?

I just got the amp for the sub. So i want to keep that.  But I don't mind replacing the subwoofer.

I'm assuming it is a passive sub since you bought a pro-style external amp.  Did you build it or buy it?  If you built it, can you give me details like driver used, enclosure size, Fb, F3, etc.?

I built the sub box in high school so its a piece of crap. At the time i just built something to house the sub.  I don't know the driver someone give to me with no label on the thing, The Vb is 5. The drivers cuts out at 30hz. I also use a  bose acoustimass 7 subwoofer that someone give me.

The Bose Acoustimass isn't a sub, it's a bass module.  Do a search here for opinions on Bose.

Can you pull the driver and take a few pictures of it?

I know everyone hates Bose and that they music quality sucks. But it was for free so i took it.

I thinking I'm going to rebuild the Sub enclosure . Right now the box is ported but I've read that a sealed box gets better quality. Is that true?

I'll will try and take pics of the driver when I get back from work.

Thanks for your help.

Go to DIYcable.com and check out their Exodus Audio DPL-10, now only $45 if you're thinking of replacing the subwoofer and cost is a factor.

It is not true.  Each design has its own tradeoffs but both, if properly designed, can sound great.

Are you building a dipole or IB sub?  Then this isn't a good choice.  Look at the Qts of the driver.  It is .76.  By the time you mount it in a decent enclosure, the final Qtc will be close to 1.0.

Thanks for pointing them out to me because I'm looking for some drivers to do an IB install in my wife's Lexus.

Right now, I would not be real concerned about buying/upgrading the surround speakers, too much. I would concentrate on spending most of the money on other speakers for the fronts, center and sub. Keep the KLH for surround (both 5.1 or 7.1) for now.

My first 5.1 surround setup included 3 KLH speakers and 1 -  8-inch KLH sub (bought them at a pawn shop for $100. Small cheaply made plastic enclosed speakers, probably about the size of yours). I used one of the speakers for my center and the other two for surround duties. They worked fine for surround (my son is using them for surround now). The two rear speakers are "affects" speakers  mainly and do not put out a whole lot of sound. Set them to "small" and I think they will work just fine, until you can replace them with something better.

I know a lot of people disagree with this thinking, but, if you are on a real tight budget constraint, you might consider this. They can be upgraded in a couple/three years when your budget allows for it.

But, of course, if you want matching speakers all the way around, then go the other route.

I agree with Frank.  I would concentrate on the front 3 speakers and just keep the KLH for surrounds.  I started with the KLH speakers and then bought the Take 5 system.  The Energy speakers are a big improvement from the KLH.  I then invested in a larger front speaker.  I really liked the Energy line, so I upgraded to the C-2 bookshelf speaker.  Much better sounding than the Take 5 mains.  If you have $400 to spend, I would look at the C-2 and the matching center channel.

Check out crutchfield.com, they have some pretty good deals right now.  I just picked up a pair of Boston Acoustics Micro130x's for $140.97 shipped.  Or if you want, check out craigslist, there are some good deals on there also.  I got a pair of Yamaha NS555's in mint condition for $100 and then bought the matching center of ebay for $60.  I feel like they are cheap cuz of what I didn't pay for them but they look great and sound better so I'm happy.
