Need help choosing 5.1 speakers?

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a new surround sound setup. I'm currently looking for a good 5.1 setup for roughly $1000 if possible. I might upgrade to a 7.1 system later in the future.

Been doing a lot of researching, and having trouble choosing good speakers. I was thinking of going with a full setup of Cerwin Vega VE series. I've heard pretty good things about them, really loud and clear. But some say they are not really accurate?

Not much of a music listener so these will be primarily used for movies. Are there better brands out there for a good deal? I hear lots of good things about infinitive technology,B&W, or even Polk Audio? Would anyone recommend these? Or is there anyone out there who has had experience with CV?

A lot of people say that having a really good center channel and sub can really make a difference. So if anyone has any advice or tips for me I would really appreciate it. Oh by the way, I don't have it yet, but I will be running my system off a yamaha rx-v1900 receiver. If that helps at all?

Thank you.

SVS-SBS-01 and Aperion-Intimus-4B and Elemental-Designs are often recommended at that price point. Polk, Definitive Tech, B&W are all very good speakers, some a little better than others. Right now I'm on an Infinity kick so I'd also look at the Beta and Primus series.

The sub doesn't have to match the brand of the speakers so I'd get an SVS, ED or HSU sub.

HI Man,
If you can find or wait until SVS puts a speaker system on their "B Stock" page (there is a good set up on there now with a center channel) then you would have a good deal.  I have never heard their speakers but their subs are amazing, (picked mine up on their B stock page for $200 under list).  Hard to audition as they are manufacturers, so you have to have faith.

For $1000 bucks you would be hard pressed to find a better deal than the one listed on the B Stock page of SVS today.

Yeah, a really good sub makes a difference but it really depends on what type of movies you are into.  The more action, the more sub...kind of makes sense really.

$1000 is a lot of money so choose wisely.  The folks at SV Sound are really good people, I can tell you from first hand experience.

<Shameless Plug> I happen to know where you can find some used SVS speakers: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/294055/5-0-speakers-for-sale

But seriously, they are great speakers at a very good price.  Buying them used will leave you with plenty of room in your budget for a great subwoofer like the PB12-NSD from SVS.

Might want to look at PSB Alpha B1 at that price point.  Monitor Audio Bronze, Wharfedale Diamond might also be considerations.  The Definitive Technology, B&W, and SVS mentioned before are also good choices (might want to add Hsu Research to your list of subwoofer choices).

Check out Hsu research too.  They sell direct, like SVS, but very good and reasonable in price too.  I've got a VTF2 sub and love it.
