Question on buying a system

Thread Starter
I just bought a house and figure now is the time to get a home theater system to go with my big screen. I was looking at black Friday ads and I found I can get a wireless Sony Bravia DVA-HDX589W for $280 dollars. It normally sells for $430. Is this a good system? Is this a real good deal? Is there any other system for that price I should look at? I would prefer to get a wireless system. Thanks for any advice.

This is a low-end HTiB that I wouldn't recommend.  It only has one audio input, so you only be able to connect one external source; that would probably be your TV.  (So no Bluray, no game systems.)

The speaker connector is proprietary; and it has an unusual impedance (3 ohms) so there's no upgrading later if you should need or want to.

At that price point you will likely not do any better.  My suggestion would be to aim for a HTiB that uses selected separates.  The main company for that is Onkyo.  You'll probably be in the $500-600 range.

Look at your receiver as the hub of your HT system as all of your components will be connected to it in one form or another. You first task is to establish what components you are going to connected to your system.  TV, Cable box, Blue Ray, PlayStation etc.  This will help you come up with what type of receiver best suits your needs, and give you an idea of what you are going to have to spend to get what you need.    At some point you are going to hit a fork in the road and decide if a HTiB will meet your needs or if individual components will better suit your needs. This will probably be around the $500 to $600 range.

Individual components have the advantage over HTiB because you can choose your speakers separate from your receiver.  If sound quality is important to you then you can audition many brands of speakers and let your ears decide which ones you like best.
