Cerwin Vega speakers?

Hey everyone,

I'm about to purchase my first av receiver. I'm gonna go with the Yamaha rx-v1900. I know it's lats years model, but you can still find them for sale. My question is what would be a good 5.1 or 7.1 surround setup for this receiver?

I've been doing a lot of researching and I'm really liking the Cerwin Vega VE line of speakers. They have been getting pretty good reviews. Im about to buy them, but I just want some other people's opinions. My budget will try to be under $1000 if possible. I can budge a little bit to make sure I get good quality speakers and a good sub. Are there any others out there that would sound better with this receiver, better deal for the money?

I'm open for all suggestions, so any help or tips would help a lot.

Thanks.

It's not what sounds good with a receiver, it's what sounds good to your ears.  CV speakers aren't known for their accuracy.  They are known for being loud and have an over emphasized bass sound.  I'm not familiar with the VE line though so my comments may be off base.

If you don't have a chance to listen to speakers before buying them, then at least buy some speakers that are known to be accurate.  There are package deals available from internet direct sellers like SVS and Elemental Designs.  Both companies should have sets that get close to your budget.  If you have to sacrifice and go with 5.1 then do that to get a larger sub.  A lot of people will skimp on the sub when it should be one of the better quality speakers in the system.  It certainly works the hardest in action movies.

I agree with Robert J. The only way to assess a speaker is to listen to it. For example, yesterday I just happened to stop and listen to a couple of speakers at a local shop. The speakers I listened to were from Klipsch and Energy. The difference between these speakers was night and day, but I wouldn't have been able to really appreciate the difference just by reading about it. I had to hear it for myself. The horn tweeters on the Klipsch speakers really emphasized the highs, while the Energy speakers just sounded flat and muffled in the higher frequencies. The Klipsch speakers also sounded much louder at the same volume setting. The Klipsch speakers sounded detailed in the highs; however, I also found that they started to cause fatigue after listening for a while.

There was also a set of BOSE bookshelf speakers in the shop. For the hell of it I flipped over to those speakers and had a listen. BOSE generally takes a beating in home theater circles and I wanted to see whether the bad rep is warranted. Well, in a word, they were shit. They were easily the worst sounding speakers of all the ones I listened to. In my case, if I was in the market for a new set of speakers I would lean toward either Paradigm or B&W. I've listened to speakers from both of those companies and I found that, for my taste, they are the most balanced in terms of reproduction. B&W speakers are especially nice. Unfortunately, they are also expensive.
