im using an s-video input on av in but im using the component in for sound will it work?

No it won't. Component is meant for video ONLY. The only thing that should be plugged in to the component input, is a component cable. Usually, it's a set of three cables, color coded red, blue and green. S-video cable carries video only, as well. If you have a receiver, run the audio cables to that instead of your tv.

If you mean the three-cable red, blue and green component cable then it won't work for sound. Component is also a video cable like s-video (only better). You need the red and white cable for sound or a digital connection like optical (also known as toslink) or coaxial, depending on your equipment.

If you tell us the brand and model numbers of the things you are trying to hook up we can better help you.
