Bought my first HDTV and have a question on hooking it up to my DVD Player / Surround Sound.

Bought my first HDTV it is a 46" LCD Sharp and I have a Samsung DVD player with surround sound.  My question is basically with audio.  I want to use HDMI cables since my player and tv support them.  Will using an HDMI from my player to my tv allow me to use the surround sound with the TV and not just when I am playing a DVD?  Or would I still need to run audio RCA's from my TV output to the players stero ports?

Can I assume you have an audio/visual receiver and surround sound speakers as well? You didn't mention them so I had to ask.

If your tv has an optical output then you need to connect it to the receiver to get true Dolby Digital/DTS. If you have a cable or satillite box then you would connect that box to your receiver with a digital connection instead.

The hdmi from your dvd player to your tv will not allow surround sound with the tv.

DVD players don't have inputs.

Is the Samsung a dvd/htib? If so, we need to know what audio inputs it has and what outputs your tv has. RCA stereo? Optical out? Model numbers of all equipment would be a big help  .
