Am thinking Yamaha, but need input please

Hello... new here. Great forums especially for home theatre. Hope to learn a lot here as I am really getting into this now.

Anyhow, the wife says I can get my surround sound since I bought her a Wii. Our big Christmas presents to one another. Or actually... so she thinkgs!...LOL! So my budget is around $300-400 for the system with receiver and speakers.

My setup currently is a 42" Toshiba Cinema Series TV, with Comcast PVR, Panasonic, BD60 BlueRay. an XBox 360, a Wii, and a PS2.

Saw the Yamaha YHT-391BL and thought it looked nice, but it doesn't seem to pass through sound at teh HDMI cable. Went to a store called Video Only and they recommended the Yamaha HTR-6230. Now this was seems sweet and is still a component system. They said that you can pass sound through the HDMI on this one and I was wondering if that is actually correct? I say this because I see conflicting info online. I would rather not have to run multiple different cables for both video and audio. I also thought about a Onyko component system, but don't think there would be one in my price range. Don't need one with the Blue-Ray or DVD, etc... So if you all could please provide input, it would be much appreciated!

$3-400 for the receiver and speakers? Subwoofer too? Video Only. Are you in the Bay Area too?

This Onkyo-6100 is a factory refurbished unit but it comes with an Onkyo warranty, decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio and has Audyssey room correction and analog to digital conversion to 1080i. I'd really consider it. But you had better hurry. It's there last one.

Am in the Seattle area. Didn't look at the Okyno's at Video Only as figure they were to high.

Any inputs on the particular Yamaha I am referring to? Also, what about the audio on the units?

Thanks much.

It looks to me like the 6230 does pass audio via hdmi so it would work for you. But it's also a very basic receiver without YAPO, TrueHD and DTS-MA support or any video conversion. It also wouldn't leave much money left over for the speakers and subwoofer. Onkyo receiver/speaker packages are pretty good for the price.

The $299 includes decent speakers at Video Only. So talked with Video Only again to check something else and yes, it does pass through thre audio, but the receiver wouldn't do anything but push through the speakers the sound. So that would leave the processing up to whatever is playing. So my BlueRay would process for movies, but I am not sure about my TV or cable box right off hand. Seems kind of silly just to be a box for plugging speakers in without actually doing anything. I know I can use the optical cables, but I am assumning I would need one for each component that I want digital sound through. So my Wii, XBox 360, cable box, etc...

So now if I go back to the Yamaha YHT-391BL would I be better for me wants and needs?

Can more of you help here? Thanks so far Gene!

I'm not sure what they mean by this. If you hook a component up to the receiver with a digital connect then the receiver will do the processing. That includes the X Box, cable box, etc.

The Yamaha 391 would do what you're looking for but in my opinion you're putting to much emphasis on the audio going thru hdmi when an optical connection is just as good for most audio formats. For your application audio thru optical or hdmi is pretty much the same, just a couple of more wires to hook up.

For $349 (plus shipping, but no sales tax) you could get a factory refurbished  Onkyo-5200 which includes Audyssey Room Correction Eq, Dynamic Eq and Dynamic Volume, better front speakers than the 391, and a much better subwoofer. It's MSRP is $599.

The weakest point in htib's are the speakers and sub woofer and those that come with the 391 don't look very good to me. I've owned that sub before and it really isn't very good.

But it's up to you of course. If you have listenned to it at Video Only and you are O.K with it's sound then it should work for you. I just think you can do better even if it means using an optical connection.
