My 60gb ps3 recently did this. I removed my HDD with no luck. From what I can tell, I think this may be a power supply failure and is unrelated to the HDD or overheating. The 60gb launch models seem to be prone to this.
Is your ps3 still under warranty? If not, it will cost you about $150 to have Sony fix it AKA send it in to them and get a refurb unit. I bought one of the new Slim models to replace my broken one because I figured I could make good use of the bigger HDD and I liked how the slim models are more power efficient.
