Sony Projector - Large yellow discolouration across most of the screen!!

Hi all,

I have a major issue with my Sony LCD projector, which is now around 6 years old. When turned on, there is a large yellow "blob" of discoloured light that covers almost the entire projected area of image. The discolouration seems to be slowly getting worse, and I am at a loss as to what may be the cause. I have already ruled out incorrectly connected wiring from DVD player to screen and things like that, it appears more likely an internal issue with the projector.
I have done some research into this issue online, and the best I can come up with is that the polariser unit (whatever that is) may be faulty, leading to the normally white image turning yellow. Is this correct? The affected area covers about 90% of the projected image. My wife (bless her) doesn't seem to think it's a big problem, but as an enthusiast it drives me nuts when whites end up being a sickly, wee-coloured yellow.

If this is an unlikely reason, what else could it be? I am going to take the beast to a technician in the next month or so (they want about $200 up front just to look at it, the greedy mongrels!) but I'd like the opinion of the forum before I do so, so that I go in with at least some basic understanding of what's going on!

So, my questions are:

1) If the polariser has gone, what kind of costings and trouble am I up for to get this fixed? Should I refinance with the bank? (kidding!)

2) What exactly is a polariser unit, and how often do they degrade (ie, am I up for this again in a few more years?)

Thanks in advance for any responses you give!!

Are you saying that the cost to fix outweighs the cost to just get another projector?

During the training classes of Sony LCD Rear Projectors there were instructions for changing panels, polarizers, and filters. Later they decided they were not going to supply the various panels as repair parts. Consequently, the repair method was to replace the entire light engine.

After taking the training class I was also authorized for Front Projector repair for about 2 weeks, then they decided that there would be no authorized field servicers for the front projectors at all. While servicers can get parts and manuals, there are no authorized servicers. Officially, as I understand it, only the Factory is authorized to service the front projectors. There is, therefore, a slight possibility that sending it in to the Factory might result in a repair that does not end up being a complete light engine replacement.

Further, since there have been unpublicized light engine extended warranties in Rear Projection LCD TVs, (which use the same light engine) the Factory might have an extended replacement policy. Since the Factory only provides the extended warranty through their authorized servicers, you have to deal with the Factory direct since there are no authorized independent servicers, only the Factory.

If the Factory refuses to provide extended coverage, you do have an arguement to present to their Consumer Relations department (not Warranty Administration) that if light engines are being replaced in RPTVs, why isn't the same accommodation being given for the front projectors. Note the magic words Consumer Relations and Accommodation
