Sound questions

HI folks.  First time on the forum here.  I have a question about my setup. I'm a novice home theater person.  Trying to get into things a little bit.  My question is about my new setup.   I recently purchased the Yamaha RX-V465 receiver.  It has 4 HDMI with audio/video passthrough.  I upgraded so I could get DTS-MA and True HD audio capabilities.  It does sound way better than my last receiver which did not have HDMI audio passthrough but I have one issue.  The sound is great up until there is a big explosion of sorts which I feel aren't that "boomy" or explosive like they should be.  To me, it sounds like they fall in the background.  I expect them to jump out at me but they just don't.  I don't know how to fix this or if this is just a characteristic of something in my setup. My setup is as follows:

Sony Playstation 3 for Blu Ray
Yamaha RX-V465 Receiver
Front speakers: Pioneer CSD9900 - These are older 15" speakers but I love them.
Rear Surround Speakers: Polk RM6751 - 1/2" tweeter * 3-1/2" woofer
Sub: Polk RM6750

The other thing I have questions about is my sub settings on the sub and on the receiver and I'm not sure if this stuff is part of the problem.

I have the Polk RM6750 sub and on the back there are settings for the following:
 
- Phase
- Low Pass
- Volume
 
I connect these to my receiver using a standard RCA cable to the sub out on the receiver and I'm not sure what the appropriate settings are for the sub to work with the receiver properly.
 
Then on the receiver I have the following related to the sub:
 
Crossover Setting
Phase - Norm or Rev

Any help regarding this stuff would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.
 
I'm not sure what to set any of this stuff.

Did you run the YAPO room correction feature of the 465? If so, it may have set the front speakers to "Large" which would send the bass frequencies to the Pioneers in stead of the subwoofer. Go into the speaker setup menu and change all speakers to "Small" and set the cross-over (in the receiver, not the subwoofer) to 80 for the fronts and 120 for the surrounds. No center channel?

As for the subwoofer settings, set the "Low Pass' all the way to the right to it's highest setting, something like 150 or 200, whatever it is.

The volume should be set somewhere in the middle. The Yamaha will control the actual volume via YAPO or by yourself in the 465's setup menu.

The Phase" switch will almost always be set to "0". 180 is another option which you can try. Use whichever seems to sound the best but as I said it's almost always "0".

It's been my experience that these auto setup features found on almost all receivers nowdays has the most trouble setting the subwoofer properly. I usually do the entire setup myself with a setup disc like Avia or Sound & Vision and an SPL meter. But you can go into the setup menu and make changes after running YAPO.

Sounds like maybe the night time dynamic range limiting might be on.  If there are options for dynamic range, set it to “max.”

 Sorry I'm just getting back to this.  I thought I would get email alerts if I got responses.

I did not use the auto config on the Yamaha.  Not a fan of things like that.  I do have everything set to small so the bass should be going to the sub.  I only have crossover settings for my sub which is set to 120.

Where is this dynamic range setting at?  I can’t find that.  Thanks.  Could be my problem.  Look forward to hearing back from you.

Polk subs aren't known for their impressive performance but you shouldn't be that disappointed.
 
I should have asked you this first. Since you didn't use YAPO, how did you calibrate the system. Did you use an SPL meter or did you do it "by ear"?  Maybe you need to turn the subs volume up in the speaker setup menu and/or on the sub itself.

As for Dynamic Range, it's explained on page 38 of your owners manual.
