Fox is still releasing a lot of classic in Spain, never released in USA - Page 5

Well spotted Dave B!

The name is a homage to Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher.

A couple more Fox titles I would like to see issued:

RED SKIES OF MONTANA
Forest fire fighting drama worth it for the cast alone.

THE FIEND WHO WALKED THE WEST
Marketed by Fox as a horror film but actually a Western remake of
Kiss of Death with a delicious hammy performance from Robert Evans.
A lot of people are after this one!

Well, I'm tempted to buy The Siege At Red River, The Bounty Hunter, and The Roots of Heaven right now.

Has anyone here ordered from zonadvd.com linked above?
What are the shipping charges to USA like, high or low?
Richard, I'd recommend these guys: Starscafe.com.
I don't know what shipping to the States is like but I've found them reliable, and everything I've ordered arrived promptly by registered mail - good customer service too.

Re the Fox titles I can confirm that "One Foot In Hell" is scope throughout and is an excellent
print. Pony Soldier is fine and Powder River is exceptional especially for lovers of early 50s
saturated colour.City Of Bad Men is slightly pale and there are some minor imperfections but
overall pretty good. All of the aforementioned are better quality than the US copy of White Feather which I find very palid. On Pony Soldier when location shots revert to studio filmed
inserts the process work is very weak;typical of Fox product at the time.Regarding City Of Bad
Men top billed Jeanne Crain has precious little screen time. The supporting cast of Western bad
guys is awesome.I did not realise Powder River is based on the same source material as Alan
Dwans Frontier Marshall and John Fords My Darling Clementine.Though the characters are
not Earp & Holliday this time round many scenes are lifted from the two previous films. The colour scenery is stunning.

If it's not a bother, can you provide links to City of Bad Man, Powder River, and One Foot In Hell ?

Thanks.

I'll try them.  I'm having trouble with DVDGo - package not arriving, no reply to my emails etc.

I don't think it is out until tomorrow. According to the back packaging, it isn't anamorphic encoded, so it is probably just an old made for cable TV transfer.

Although not Fox titles does anyone out there in Home Theatre Forum Land
know the quality of the following Spanish issued DVDs.

SASKATCHEWAN
RAMROD
THE LONE GUN
RUN OF THE ARROW.

These films were leased from the majors to smaller companies like
Suevia Films.

Thank you.
The Spanish edition of Run of the Arrow is appalling. It looks to be 1.66:1 non-anamorphic but it's a fuzzy washed out mess that looks like a weak VHS port. I can't say for the others, but Suevia's releases in general are not something I'd recommend.

There's a very fine edition of Saskatchewan available from Koch Media in Germany.

That's the great thing about sites like this, you can check & ask before buying.

Screencaps from the Fox Spanish release of Hudson's Bay here.

Unfortunately Dvdgo is no longer a recommended shop. In Spain, "Movies Distribution" works very well: http://www.moviesdistribucion.com/ (as you can see, the browser supports original title search, which is always very useful).

I have used them in the past; they do ship overseas but their system is not set up well to cope with it. For international orders, they don't add on the shipping cost when you order. Instead once they receive the order they email you back with an amended order with the shipping added, then you have to reconfirm you will pay the higher total.

In my case they didn't actually do that, but instead just added 20euro to the cost without asking. This was for three discs on an inter-EU order - it was expensive because they used FedEx Express!

Also no-one there speaks English, this can cause problems if non-Spanish-speaking customers have any problems. They probably had a good laugh at my BabelFish translated emails! There whole website is exclusively in Spanish

Lastly it didn't help that when I ordered, nearly everyone there was on their summer holiday. Spain seems to close for about 3 months during the summer...

Thank you. I am a non-Spanish speaking customer so I would have problems. I'll try Starscafe instead.

Not Fox, but I see that Warner Bros has just released Raintree County in Spain. I wonder whether it is restored? I'm in Spain later this week so will look out for it (and others).

Doesn't look very promising according to this.

Thanks Livius. I won't bother looking for that one!

Unfortunately, as is usual in editions Impulse / Warner, the quality of master used is very poor and without anamorphic enhancement.

Here you can see screen caps of the Impulso/Warner edition, and comparison with the television broadcast of TCM channel:

Just got this today, and yes it looks very nice and is indeed anamorphic scope.

I just purchased in Barcelona  FLIM FLAM MAN (anamorphic 2.35:1) and TENDER IS THE NIGHT 2.35:1 not anamorphic.    RAINTREE COUNTY is the cut version 2.35 but not anamorphic.

As rare classic westerns are being discussed, I thought contributors to this topic may be interested to learn that here in Australia, a company called BOUNTRY CLASSICS has licensed some Universal titles, focusing on Westerns. I have only found them so far in a small store which sells low-priced goods and 'Tattersalls' betting products. However, the ones I have picked up are AUS$6 and look great. The following Audie Murphy titles are amongst them- THE CIMARRON KID,POSSE FROM HELL(cover indicates 4x3 transfer, however it MAY be in Wide Screen as the following title is despite the same misinformation on the back), WALK THE PROUD LAND (Full CinemaScope transfer, non-anamorphic); also SASKATCHEWAN (full-frame, it appears to be a p+s transfer of a 1.85 to 1 movie, great colour),THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH (Anamorphic CinemaScope), HORIZONS WEST,STREETS OF LAREDO, LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER and THE CRUSADES (DeMille). There are no extras, but for AUS$6 (about US$5.40), I'm not complaining, particularly in this day of' '$20 DVD-R classics' we are now living in! Mike

Cheers for that. I had no idea Walk the Proud Land was out anywhere.
Hi Colin,  I have never seen the film but very glad I "took a chance" and was rewarded with a Scope transfer. As I have said, it's not anamorphic but you can't have everything. The other Audie Murphy title available is RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO (1954), which may have been shot full-frame. (IMDB doesn't give an aspect ratio, as it did for SASKATCHEWAN, which surprisingly is cited as 2:1).Occasionally,movies shot to be projected at around 1.85 :1 were photographed full-frame with "unnecessary" picture information at the top and bottom of the frame (ie. lots of blank spaces above heads, even in close-ups). If the dvd release is the full image from the negative, one can watch the film on 'Zoom' or 'Cinema' on a Wide Screen TV- basically doing what the projectionist's "Wide Screen" lens would do-and thus see the film as the director intended. I have found this to be the case with the fullframe Paramount releases of THE NAKED JUNGLE, THE COUNTRY GIRL and ELEPHANT WALK. Movies from 1954, a "crossover" year for wider-shaped movies in Hollywood, seems to be a good year for movies in this category made by studios that did not immediately (or fully) embrace CinemaScope (ie. Paramount, Universal + Columbia). I had hoped this would be the case with the local BOUNTY releases of THE BENNY GOODMAN STORY and SASKATCHEWAN, but they look to be panned-and-scanned versions of the 1.85:1 image.(Still, better than nothing and at least one is not missing as much as p/s C-Scope). However POSSE FROM HELL and RIDE CLEAR OF DIABLO may be transfers similar to the Paramount titles mentioned above.(Or DIABLO may have been shot for 1.33 to 1, particularly if it was released early in '54 and therefore shot primarily in '53) Will let you know if I check them out.
Amusingly, the -otherwise attractive- cover art for THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH (Universal's first Scope movie) falsely claims that it was nominated for 7 Academy Awards in 1954. As entertaining as the film may be, this was NOT the case (and apparently it is also NOT the film in which Tony Curtis infamously exclaims "Yonda lies the castle of my fodder!" (This was apparently in THE SON OF ALI BABA).
Apologies for digressing from the main topic here. Thanks to the contributor who gave details above re the Spanish transfer of TENDER IS THE NIGHT. You answered a question I was nursing. For anyone beyond Australia's "land of sweeping plains" who would like to buy the BOUNTY titles, there are some sellers on ebay.com.au who are pricing them at around AUS$5 and are shipping to overseas locations. For local people, I saw some today in the Big W store at the Southland mall in Cheltenham,VIC for $8.83, the REJECT shop had LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER (great transfer!) for $5 and the small store which is offering them for $6 is near the Safeways supermarket. I'm sure other shopping centres in Australia with similar sorts of stores would also be carrying them. I will let HTF know if any other Universal titles are released by this company.

It's very interesting to hear about the Australian Bounty releases and, also, that they're of good quality at such a low price point. I think an e-Bay Au. order for Walk The Proud Land, Streets Of Laredo, Posse From Hell and Horizons West will be placed very shortly! It will be especially rewarding if POSSE FROM HELL turns out to be in wide screen too. The German Koch release is in 4:3 I believe.

Speaking of Australian releases, I noticed the other day that THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE has also been released, apparently in wide screen, there. Oddly, it's described as being in NTSC format on DeVoteD's website. I thought that Oz was exclusively PAL territory. Anyway, it looks to be the sort of release that I would need some reassurance about before buying. Does anyone own this? If so, what sort of quality is it?
The link to DeVoteD's listing is here:-

Thanks Michael. I'd already spotted Posse from Hell, and it's on its way to me right now. I have Saskatchewan and Ride Clear of Diablo from Germany and they're both full screen.

BTW, maybe this thread should be linked into the new PAL and other Regions one?

Oh, and hello to Dafydd - good to see you here.

Great Colin. When you get POSSE, let me know how it looks. If it is fullframe and you find that zooming in on the image does not seem to cause you to lose anything of importance (and improves the look of the composition), it could be a similar transfer to the Paramount ones I cited above. Of course, the best result would be to see a 1.85 to 1 image with black bars. On the bright side, it is not a big investment should you wind up with a panned+scanned version of the film, which will at least look far better than a vhs copy.
Hi Daffyd.  A number of MGM releases here (eg. KISS ME KATE) are in NTSC and say so on the cover.( As far as I can gather, all TVs sold here are now multi-system).If I can find a review of it or speak to someone who has it, I will let you know via HTF. We seem to be in a time now when classic releases from major studios are coming out through new (and presumably) small companies. (By the way Daffyd, I have a Welsh grandfather and visited Swansea in '08- are you in or from Wales?)
Getting back to Fox and Spain, I'm very interested to hear from someone who has purchased TENDER IS THE NIGHT (1962,Henry King) to hear what the image and sound quality is like. How does it compare to the print broadcadt on the Fox movie channel? Is it a Stereo release? Have any more Fox titles been announced? I am interested in a (forgotten) 1959 comedy called THE MAN WHO UNDERSTOOD WOMEN with Henry Fonda and Leslie Caron. Has it been released anywhere? Also, the Joanne Woodward drama THE STRIPPER (1963),CENTENNIEL SUMMER(1946) and Philip Dunne's PRINCE OF PLAYERS(1955).Hoping Spain may come to the rescue re these!

I got TENDER IS THE NIGHT while I was in Valencia last week, not realising it was non-anamorphic. I can't compare picture with the TV version but it looks OK to me. It's in mono sound. I was very pleased to also get THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN, THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR and 23 PACES TO BAKER STREET, all anamorphic scope and true stereo. Spain is certainly a great place for getting classic films on DVD - the shelves are full of them.
