Topic update, notification Emails.

Just something to add to the things that need to be adjusted.

email notices are jumbled up with added code that makes some unreadable or at least hard to read and the email seems to have an odd mustard color.

So what I hope for is something more readable, no yellow and a working link that takes you either to the last post in the topic or the first unread post.

Now the link goes right to the first post in the topic.

I second the above post.

Also this forum previously and many other forums allow for unsubscribing the topic right in the email notice.

So is there anyone looking at this?

We have quite a long list of improvements we'd like to make to the email digest system.  This includes:
  • Cleaning up the display of HTML in the email
  • Linking directly to the post rather than to the thread itself (primarily for immediate notification emails)
  • Introducing granularity for subscribing to various users, reviews, threads, etc. to receive email updates at different rates (meaning some could be subscribed to get immediate notifications and other you could select daily digests)

I'll add the following to the list:
  • Unsubscribing to the content item itself, rather than unsubscribing from all notifications (primarily for immediate notification emails)

Currently, you can unsubscribe to all email notifications via the one-click unsubscribe; however, to remove a specific subscription, you do have to perform that action on-site.  You can do this via your Subscription Management page (clicking the "Edit Subscriptions" button on the home page) or directly from the Activity Feed which displays your subscriptions on the home page.  Any time you mouse over a subscription, you'll see a line pop up showing why the item is appearing in your subscriptions and a red X next to it to quickly unsubscribe.

thanks for the news.

The digest emails are back up and running.  Let me know if you run into any other issues with them.  Thanks!

Digest emails?
Oh shoot, I of course was going too fast and meant to post that in a different thread about emails.  Whoops!  My fault.  Apologies.

Ok the emails are really getting on my nerves now.

You can go back only to 2007 to edit subscribed topics.

I contually get emails for topics that I've subbed to many years before that I there is no way to stop them that I can find.

I'm going to need to unsub from every topic which in effect will cause me to visit the forum LESS.
This needs to be fixed.

Via the Subscription Manager page, we only display 1000 of your subscriptions at a given time.  I'm guessing you likely have more than 1000 and when you sort by date, the oldest fall off that list.

However, if the issue is that other users are replying to these older threads causing you to receive subscription digest emails, the threads will appear in your activity feed.  When you mouse over the thread in question, you can unsubscribe there easily by clicking the X which appears next to the subscription line.

I like the old forum better. I still end up at the newst post rather than first unread post. Tired of this & its causing me to not come here anymore.

for a few days the email link was going to the first new post but now I'm going right to the first post again.

Is there a setting i need to look at to fix this?

I don't even come here anymore because of the changes.

Norm:

What, in particular, is keeping you away?  It would be helpful for us to know.

Read my previous posts in this section.

Well...I just looked at your posting history and only saw posts in feedback threads on e-mail notifications and image hosting.  All the rest seem to be in science fiction-related threads (Star Wars, Galactica, etc.)

The only thing I'm sure of is that you want to be taken to the new posts when you click on the link in your e-mail notifications.  Anything else besides that?  Or is that enough to keep you away from the HTF?

That & the fact that the emails sent are a mess also. I don't even read the emails anymore.  Is this something you guy refuse to fix or can't?

Norm:

Thanks for the feedback. You should be taken to your first unread post with your email notifications but if you are not I will let the dev team know. I agree with you on the emails having a lot of junk in them and we are working to get this cleared up.

Parker:  If you look at TonyD's post (#13 above)...it looks as if the problem has returned.

Tony-

I use weekly or daily digest subscriptions which look different.  I am immediately subscribing to this thread.  It also looks to me that when the most recent post has a quote box in it that the coding comes through on the notification email.  Would you mind replying to this post twice, once with a quote and once without so I can see the various links and what they are doing so I get the issues fixed?

Thanks!

Thanks Tony.  Haven't seen the quote one come through, but the two links are the same on the no quote one.  If you still have the email you referenced above can you forward it to feedback 'at' hometheaterforum.com?

I'll look for that email.

Adam I just used the email notice for this topic and both links now go to the last unread post.

But I used the email notice link for the Spartacus topic and both links go to the first post.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the last time the topic was visited.

Not sure.  We are going to make some more changes to notification emails over the next few weeks.  In the next few days we are going to change the wording to make it clear where the various links go.  One link will go to the first post of the thread and one will go to the first unread post.  In approx two weeks we will have another update that will clear up some of the HTML "leftovers" from posts that show up in the emails.

I just want to know how to get rid of the default setting of subscribe to everything I post in!

Joe:

Go to the My Profile tab at the top of any page.  Click Edit Account Details.

Under E-Mail preferences change the "Set new subscriptions" setting to whatever you'd like.  I use "Site Only. No e-mail."
