Universal and TCM's Partnership For Made-To-Order DVD - Page 5

These totally look like pressed DVD's.  I know what earlier TCM Vault Collection discs and Warner Archive discs look like (the same), and these are not them.

I kinda expected some Robert Osborne intros on these, since they mentioned it in the press release, but I guess that will be on some future releases.  Still, the picture looks excellent on the two films I've watched so far.

Sounds like Universal is taking the time to do their vault collection properly... I've just placed my order!  :)
I wonder if they pressed an initial batch, and once it runs out they MOD the rest?  That probably doesn't make any sense.
They could have aranged to press small batches on demand as needed - it's not totally far feched - once you have the master you can press as many dvds as you need :)

DVD Savant reviews the collection on the TCM site (he's an unbiased reviewer): http://www.tcm.com/movienews/index/?cid=277997

Just got my set and it's everything I could have wanted.  Great looking transfers, at least some extras and pressed discs.  I'm not sure what exactly they mean by MOD discs for this program, but the discs I received are most definitely pressed.  Perhaps they originally pressed this first title and then had a change of strategy to create the MOD program.  It wouldn't surprise me if future entries in the program are burned, but this Universal Horror set is worth it if you're a fan of the genre.

I'm anxiously awaiting word about the quality of Remember the Night, which is available as of this week. Anybody order it yet?

Edit: Also, TCM will be showing it twice this month. I wonder if their print will be improved from the last time they showed it just a few months back, as a result of the new transfer for DVD?

Glenn, I preordered my copy in the beguinning of November, and Movies Unlimited hasn`t even shipped it yet. So I think we will have to wait a little longer.

The initial ship date of late November was pushed back to Dec. 1.  Got a notification that mine shipped yesterday, so I assume most should be going out in the next couple of days.

Mark, could you give us some impressions about the disc as soon as you receive it? I am anxious to have some information not only regarding the transfer but also if it is a pressed disc or a DVD-R.
I am also curious whether 'Remember The Night' is pressed or DVD-R.  I asked Barrie Maxwell, who was gracious enough to reply - however he said he had yet to receive a copy, so he was unable to answer.

Mine shipped yesterday also.

Well, the early word from a DVD Talk poster who just received his is that Remember the Night is a pressed disc.  Post number 32 here.

Yep, just got mine.  Appears to be pressed.  And also just took  a quick glance at the transfer, which appears to be fantastic, and much, much better than I recall it looking on TCM (it's been a couple of years, but I remember much more print damage).  The remaster looks sensational.  Really looks like they did right by this one.

Thanks for the updates.  I felt safe enough to place my own order.

Thanks again.
Yes, thanks for the comments. Sounds pretty good.
I am starting to wonder if they are pressing on demand. Or, at the very least pressing small runs and then assembling completed DVDs  (Covers/Case) as needed.
It's still early days.  There's every reason to believe that these initial releases were always scheduled as traditional backlot releases but then got caught up in the switch to the new MOD program.  Let's see what happens with stuff sheduled to come out in say March.
Just got my copy today and watched a few minutes of it. The transfer looks great, but it is interlaced. Can anyone confirm if the horror titles were interlaced as well? I know this was addressed earlier in the thread, but I didn't see anything conclusive.
Why are studios still doing this?

What's the incentive for them, or is it simple lack of know-how?

I'm going to return my set if all of the titles are interlaced, and let them know why... it just doesn't make sense to me!
Interlacing issues with Remember the Night aside, this looks like a much more appealing program compared to the Warner Archive.  I'm planning on purchasing both this and the Cult Horror collection this January.

Did anybody else use the cheap shipping option (USPS)?   I ordered on 11/28, it shipped on 12/3 and there has been no further tracking updates since then.  I knows it says 10-14 days, but I rarely see that and the lack of tracking progress scares me.

USPS Delivery Confirmation isn't "tracking." The only required scan is upon delivery or delivery attempt; items don't normally get scanned in transit. The initial "scan" is actually a record of an electronic manifest transmitted to the USPS by the sender. The only USPS product that currently provides full tracking is Express Mail.

Well I hope you enjoy this lot Poder, but I'm just not interested. It was great while it lasted, & I have most of my favorite films on good looking DVD's. I'm still buying lots of classic hollywood titles that I didn't get around to buying when they were released, esp. as the studios are practically giving them away these days.

Thanks for the input.  That's obviously what is going on, but they do refer to it as "Tracking".  It's amazing that anybody uses the post-office any more.  It's so hopelessly out-dated, slow, & inefficient.

I realize that I paid for the cheapest shipping, but it was still $4.95.  I can't remember the last time that I paid that much to ship any single movie, nor can I remember the last time that I paid $20 for a single movie (outside of a deluxe-edition).  Yet, here I am 2 weeks after the order date and nearly 2 weeks from the shipping date with no sign of package, nor any clue of where it's at.  This will be the last time that I use this TCM service unless they do something about their S/H costs & methods.

99% of my video shipments, both purchases and rentals, come via USPS and I can't remember the last time I had a serious problem. My Warner Archives purchase was shipped via UPS, however, presumably because Warner or their fulfillment service sees some value in that carrier's added enhancements, such as full tracking, but as it arrived no sooner than a Postal Service item from the same point would have, the only difference to me was that I had to pay more for shipping.

Most of my packages come USPS.But the ones that do come UPS always seem to be quicker and tracable. With tracking.
I think I'm in the same boat Eric is in.

In post # 135, on 12-4-09, I described how I placed my order for 'Remember The Night', based on the 'pressed disc' feedback.

Apart from the initial email confirming my order, I have not received any other emails, and I am still waiting for the actual package, as well.
Have you guys gone on the Movies Unlimited website and into the My Account area?  There you can check the status of your orders.  There is also a "tracking number", which is probably just delivery confirmation, for shipped items.  But ususally the packages I get utilizing the USPS delivery confirmation do get scanned at various locations during the shipping process, not just at the beginning and end.
I didn't create an account on their website when I placed my order, so I can't check anything there.  That said, I'm using the E-mail that they sent me with the "Tracking" number and their link to the USPS site.  There hasn't been any change in status since it was scanned in New Jersey on the 3rd.

I'm really disappointed at this time, but don't feel that I've waited long enough to file a complaint.

My experiences with the post office are almost uniformally horrible except when I used Priority or First Class mail.  It's almost like if you don't use those methods, they send the package to the neglect department.

On the other hand, I can use the cheapest methods for UPS or FedEx (Which are usually comporable price-wise)...and I get my package in less than a week almost 100% of the time.
