Hi everyone i am new to the forum and im posting because my stereo isnt giving me the punch im looking for right now im currently running. a yamaha a/v reciever model HTR-5760 it seems to have pretty good clarity and power for my needs. my front speakers are bose 701 floor standing speakers my center is a polk audio cs245i. my subwoofer is a velodyne ct-120. this system sounds very good and is loud but its not delivering the punch im looking for i thing i may be in need need of some new floor standing speaker but i really like my 701 would todays models blow these speakers away? i also was offered a a package deal for 1500 that includes a onkyo ds-939 a/v reciever bose 901 with pedastols and another matching velodyne ct-120. would this full fill my needs

If you're looking for punch, I would definitely avoid the 901s and their direct-reflecting technology.  Do a little searching around this forum (and others) and you will find that bose in general gets very little respect.  There are lots of great speaker companies out there, so I would say that your best bet is to get out to some good HT stores and do some listening to see which brands offer the sound you're looking for.

In terms of quality, it seems that the 901s were the lone exception to the Bose rule.  (I make that statement with information gleaned from reading posts over time. I've never owned 901s, couldn't afford them back in the day).  I haven't heard anything about the 901s as far as effeciency goes.

I definitely agree that the first step may be to upgrade front speakers.  When you say "punch" what exactly are you looking for?  Would you like to have more mid bass?  Where do you feel the system is lacking?  Also are you watching movies and want a better surround experience or are you just primarily listening to music?  This can help us suggest a path to go down when upgrading equipment.

I run Yamaha and you probably aren't going to get a receiver that has signifigant improvments in the area of "power" and "sound quality" until you start spending quite a bit more money.  There are a lot of great floor speakers that might be able to deliver the sound you are looking for when paired with the Yamaha.

Take a look at Klipsch or JBL for a mid level speaker, both can play loud and have ample bass without giving up good sound quality.  Don't know much about polks floor speaker line, might be nice to have matching fronts and center to match tonally.
