Magic Mouse announced - Page 2

I just got mine from our local Apple store here in Ft. Worth.  The mouse is awesome.  At first I thought the left and right swiping was going to be a bit awkward and I would have to chase the mouse around my desk.  However, that is not at all how it acts in reality.  The weight of the mouse, combined with it's sensitivity, make it extremely easy to use and control.  It takes very little of the swiping movement to activate the action.  Very nice mouse with a lot of possibilities for future functions. Once I set up the speed in system preferences it is a joy to use.

Don,

Very good to start reading reviews here,
yours in particular.

I pour through various Mac forums and I

have to tell you the LIKES and DISLIKES

are neck and neck.

Most people complain about the size of
the mouse, how it hurts their hands, and
the lack of controls for Expose.

Others, like yourself, really like the
effortless swipe function.

I am still three weeks away from receiving
my 27" iMac with the mouse.  I am just
wondering if I am going to be swayed away
from my wireless Logitech MX REVOLUTION
which to date has been a fantastic mouse.

Ron, it's always tricky projecting likes for someone else, but at least you have the luxury of already having a mouse that you really like.

I do like the mighty mouse...when it works. I'm sick of always having to do their kluge workaround for "pseudo-cleaning" the ball (without disassembling it) to get it to be responsive.

I played around with the magic mouse at a local apple store and I think I'll like it. But if it doesn't "do it" for me, I'm stuck because I don't want to go back to the mighty mouse which has never solved the problem of cleaning the rollerball. If only apple would make an openable design it would be easy for users to clean it out ourselves!

If it happens you don't like the magic mouse and you also don't want to go back to the mighty mouse, take a look at the MX Revolution or similar from Logitech. Really a great mouse.

As I mentioned, been reading a lot of reviews
across the net over the past few days.

One of the primary complaints about the mouse
is overall tracking speed, said to be sluggish.
Quite a few people have turned to a freeware
program, ZOOM MOUSE, which supposedly
helps immensely.

Other complaints come from those who own
27" iMacs.  Because of the width and all the
extra real estate it seems you can't track the
mouse from one end of the screen to the other
with a simple swipe of the finger.

Of course, until I own one of these myself I
am only reporting what I read.
I have a 30 inch monitor and without changing the tracking speed it was a little difficult to move across the screen.  All I did was set the tracking speed to fast and it was no longer a problem.

Don,

So good to hear that you aren't experiencing
any lags in mouse scrolling across your screen.

Very promising.

OK, now I don't know what is going on.  The new mouse was working fine.  I opened VM Ware Fusion 3 and now the mouse is very jerky.  Even after restarting it is doing the same thing.  Very discouraging since it was working just fine.  This makes no sense at all.  I am going to play with it some more tomorrow and maybe even call Apple.  I will let you all know what happens.

All is right with the world today.  I uninstalled the mouse and reinstalled it and now it works great again.  I haven't tried it with Fusion yet.  I am kind of afraid to since I don't want it to screw up again.  Apple is supposed to be coming out with drivers to fix these issues.  I have noticed that it does react like a typical bt mouse though.  I takes a second for it to "wake up" after it has been sitting for a while.  Another issue, for me at least, is the 1 finger scrolling.  I am so used to using 2 fingers with my MBP that I find myself trying this on the new mouse.  All that seems to do is confuse the crap out of the mouse and make it jump around.

Started using one yesterday. I've had no problem with the tracking speed, but I would hardly call the swipe functions effortless. Merely scrolling vertically through a document often proved to be an exercise in futility. I'll try it for another week or two, but I could easily see myself reverting back to my Mighty Mouse. As long as I would occasionally upend it and dislodge the lint and dirt underneath the scroll ball, I had absolutely no problems navigating through documents with it.
Michael, that is so weird that you are having problems with the swiping feature.  That is the one issue that I have not had. I just barely move my fingers to the left or the right and it swipes.  I wonder if you may have gotten a bad mouse.  Did you use one at the Apple store before you bought yours?  Just curious if you did, was it easier or more difficult.  Also, did you download the update?

Downloaded the update Don, but no difference. We received five of them in the office yesterday, so I'll have to try another one next week.
Just got mine this morning. Apparently they're flying off the shelves because the Apple store I went to just got their first shipment Friday and there was only 3 left before I bought mine. Love the minimalist packaging though. DL'd the driver, had very little experience with it but for what little I have used it for, I like it.

Was yours this hard to open? RT @TUAW: Magic Mouse unboxing video: Man vs. Tape http://bit.ly/F7CZK  That is not very Apple :(
post #45 of 88
Not at all. I think that video is just a tad exaggerated. First he tried to open it the wrong way, ignoring the gray arrow on the tape which tells him which way he should try to open it. When I saw the gray arrow, it was a snap to peel off. Granted the second tape on the other side had no gray arrow (weird oversight) but when I tried the same bottom left to top right peel motion, easy as pie.

Took about 15 seconds to open. I think that video guy is a drama queen.

I'm sure his sausage fingers didn't help. :)
Actually I sort of agree with the point of that video. Compared to Apple's other product packaging, the Magic Mouse packaging is downright bizarre and, regardless of whether they used recycled plastic, it doesn't seem very "green" to me. No, it didn't take me as long to get the thing open, but there was a hefty amount of tape adhesive left on the bottom of the mouse that I had to rub off.
I had the same problem with the tape on the bottom.  That adhesive did take a while to get off.

Okay I'll say it: I miss the side buttons.

Otherwise all is well with the Magic Mouse. I've set the tracking slider to max and have no problems with it. I like the swiping motions, and I like the feel of the mouse much better than the mighty mouse. Also, the scrolling is superior and I know I'll never need to clean the %$#$%# trackball again!!!
I finally gave up.  I came home today and now the mouse doesn't want to work again.  I try to scroll and it takes about 3 seconds to respond.  I try to move the mouse across the screen and it shutters and lags. I have had enough of this. One minute it works and the next it doesn't.  I am taking it back tomorrow.  It just amazes me how this mouse went from working great to working like crap after the updates.

One final troubleshooting step I would recommend before you return your mouse (if you're interested in keeping it). Have you tried to download the .dmg file from Apple's website and reinstall it? Maybe something in your original install from Apple Software Update was corrupted?

I downloaded the update from the Apple site yesterday hoping to fix some other strange issues.  I can try uninstalling it 1 more time.  This just feels like it needs a few more updates to really get it right.  I have been doing more research online and the issues with this mouse are well documented.  This is not a typical Apple product as I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product. I actually think either the updates have made it worse or I have a bad mouse.

I took it back this morning.  They said there was something wrong with it but since they were out of stock they couldn't just replace it.  I am going to try again later, after they come out with Windows 7 drivers. Looks like it is back to my trusty Logitech.

Like Ron, I use Logitech's MX Revolution. Tried out the Magic Mouse (hate the name. It reminds me of when I worked for Disney and everything was "magic." ugh.) in the store last week and didn't like it for one very low-tech reason.

It's too small.

Another nice Apple concept IMO that really works well only on the drawing board, at least for this big-handed user.

Two in the house, one unboxed and up and running. love it so far.  Opening it was a LOT easier if you didn't cut the plastic but peeled it.  #2 is in my laptop bg waiting for the first time I'm on the road, later this week.

As far as the magic mouse's functionality, I have zero problems.

I am experiencing the same thing as Bob_L though...I think it's too small. And my hands are not big. Or maybe small isn't the right word, but it isn't as "ergonomically appealing" to my hands as the Mighty Mouse was, or my current Logitech MX518 at home, and M500 at work. I also used a MS Intellimouse 4.0 and found that easy to use in an ergonomic sense.

It's only the Magic Mouse that is causing some discomfort after extended use. Maybe I need to become acclimated to it...just trying not to get carpal tunnel...

I find I'm constantly picking it up and moving slightly, which is oddly hard because of it's small size.
