R.I.P. Great New Release Schedules

In years gone by, especially around this season, I was practically overwhelmed by the number of great titles that were being announced for DVD release. This year: a veritable desert. Sure, I understand the economy sucks, downloads are more popular, and studios are shying away from catalog titles. Even those classics previously rumored for Blu-ray ("Sunset Boulevard." "Elephant Man," "Bridge On the River Kwai," "Lawrence Of Arabia," "Walkabout," and many more) have been either dropped or delayed for however long. I don't blame the studios (rather, Wall Street, banks, politics), but I lament this dearth of new dvd titles, as so much remains unreleased. The Warner Archives is a great idea but does not go nearly far enough (I think there needs to be some incentive for online rental companies like Netflix to purchase and offer these DVD-R's for rent, as well as allowing consumers to pick their own 5 for $50.00 titles from the entire listing). Guess I am just lamenting the wonderful past. Things change.

Financially, I would dread the 4th quarter.  It seemed like a solid 10 weeks of releases that I could barely keep up with.  This year, it's literally down to one heavy week.   A few other releases sprinkled here and there, but the only significant week for me is November 3 and even it isn't that bad.

Fourth quarter isn't that bad compared to the rest of the year. Several nice releases in late October, early November. I just hope we'll see some retail announcements from Warner for early 2010.

Edit: And I miss those Mondays when the new announcements from Warner were published in this board.

Are downloads really that popular?  I've never heard any figures.

It has gotten even worse in the tv-on-dvd category. Strange too because it does seem to still be a very active market. There are still consumers out there waiting for new releases. Not sure if it is a psychological safety net for the studios or what. It has definitely changed a lot this year.

According to ClassicFlix.com, classic releases are down 27% this year with Warner and Fox seeing the biggest reduction in output.

'MGM & Fox: Are they still in business?'

'VCI continues to excel with its British sets, Serials, Westerns & mainly B selections'; the level of output may be decent, as to whether they actually 'excel' is a matter of debate.

Q4 will always be a busy time - that's when all the big summer movies come out on DVD.  As long as they still churn 'em out in the Summer there'll always be something to buy in November. However, I wish the studios wouldn't wait until the holiday season to release the best stuff

I think we might be talking at cross purposes here. I'm assuming the OP was referring to the dearth of new catalogue titles on DVD in Q4.

While I would like to have HANGOVER, I much rather have RAINTREE COUNTY, SAMSON & DELILAH, or a collection of ANDY HARDY films before BRUNO or some of that other crap this summer.

No release date yet: (all blu rays)

Paramount (Apocalypse Now/Once Upon Time West).

No they are not.  Still a very very small piece of the pie.  Many phones have the capability to play full length movie videos yet how many people do this?  Not in my neighborhood.
