Hi,guys new to the site, first post.I just bought my first surround sound system consisting of a yamaha rx-v463 receiver and a klipsch quintet III surround 5.1 setup with a klipsch synergy 10" sub.My cd-dvd player and xbox sound great while anything I watch on T.V. is far less impressive. Is the HDMI cable coming from my digital cable box the right way to get the audio?I have that ran to the tv with an optical cable coming back to the receiver. Also I am pretty happy with this setup for now but what would be the cheapest, easiest ways to upgrade this setup? Thanks from a newbie.

I am assuming that your dvd/x-box go to your receiver, then audio to the speakers and video into your tv? This will give you the better sound. I don't think that taking the sound directly from your cable box to the tv, then back to the receiver and out to the speakers have the same impact. I don't think the tv (could be wrong) will output anything more than a 2 channel signal to the receiver, so it won't be able to output discrete signals to your speakers. (I read this somewhere or something very similar to this).

Can you not take your cable box hdmi to the receiver, then hdmi to the tv (what I would do, if possible)? I don't know the capabilities/features of your Yammie. Does it have hdim?

The optical output on the TV only passes surround sound back from the TV's tuner . . . not from HDMI or other inputs on the TV.  Run the HDMI from your cable box to your receiver and then connect your receiver to your TV and you should be good to go.

Expanding on Seth's comment... The optical output may pass sound back from HDMI sources, but it will be down converted to stereo.
