Receiver that still passes audio to the TV via HDMI?

You can't do both the TV and AVR.  My Denon has a setting in the menu where you can specify if you want to use the TV speakers or the speakers hooked up to the receiver.  I have to pick one or the other. 

This is because the source (DVD, Blu-ray, game console, etc) queries the EDID of the audio and video components to see what they are capable of.  If you are using your TV your TV tells the source device that it can just handle two channel sound.  If it is your receiver it will let the source know that it can handle surround sound.  If there was a receiver that did allow both to be connected all connected devices would have to accept the lowest common denominator from the source: in this case two channel audio.

Would it be theoretically possible for a company to make a receiver, or a piece of hardware external to the receiver, that, when queried by the game console, blu-ray player, etc, reports that it can handle surround, but then do processing on it to down convert to 2 channel? Then, since the source is feeding it surround, it could output surround to one attached system and stereo do a different attached system....  I'm not knowledgeable about audio components but I am otherwise technically inclined. ... The only reason I see why this wouldn't work (in pure theory) is if there is copy protection involved and the copy protection doesn't allow this sort of thing (which it probably wouldn't).  :)

Why would you want to listen to your tv speakers instead of your home theater speakers?

i know for fact that some recievers have the option to pass through audio to tv and the receiver speakers. My cheap receiver does it but i have optical cable for the sound. If you run 2 cables then you should be able to run tv speakers and receiver spekears
