Another Newbie with stupid questions...

Hey all, I have to admit I am pretty stupid when it comes to home video systems. However, the wife and I have been checking out some of the LCD TV's. We really like some of them and are considering purchasing one. We would like to hang it on the wall and get rid of our entertainment system. Not looking to put in a home theatre as we only watch TV once in awhile. However, we do enjoying watching DVD's on occasion.

I have a few simple questions to start if some of you more knowledgable guys would care to entertain me?

First off, looking to spend around 800-1500.00 on a TV. Would like to stick with an LCD but do not have a preference on brand.

Is there anyway or type of TV out there that we could hang on the wall and use a DVD player with wireless? I hate the thought of opening up my walls to run wires and I would think with today's technology I should be able to have a DVD player that would send signal wireless to the TV... I could then put the DVD player somewhere in the livingroom and not have wires running up and down my wall.

Thoughts?... Any suggested reading?

What you're looking for is commonly called Wireless HDMI.  It is not yet a perfected technology (often limited to 24fps) and it is very expensive (around $800).

Where do you intend to put the DVD (or BluRay) player?  If it will be directly below the tv then fishing the cables will be very easy . . . even in an insulated wall.

Also, have you considered how you will get power to the TV?  I assume you will have to run wires for that unless you already have an outlet high up on your wall.

What size TV are you looking for?  Samsung and Sony are two of the top LCD makers, so that's a good place to start.  You can probably pick up a 46"-50" pretty easily within your budget.  If you want larger than that you may need to look at a "budget" brand.

I agree with Seth that it probably won't be as hard as you think to set your TV/DVD up.

But to solve your problem, there are some TVs out there with built-in DVDs.  I don't like that approach, since when it breaks or you need an upgrade you're SOL.  But it may suit your needs.  What size TV are you considering?

I have several TVs with built in DVD players in rooms where I don't want surround sound.  If you are just going to put a TV on the wall and not have any type of surround sound it might be a good way to go.  Sharp also makes some LCD TVs with built in Blu-ray players.  If you are planning on installing surround sound too then you will have to run a digital audio cable from the TV anyway.  Samsung actually makes a wall mountable Blu-ray player that you can put next to the TV that might be your best option: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/blu-ray/blu-ray-players/BD-P4600/XAA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=features

Actually it is kind of funny because I never even thought about power.... Guess I would have to fish some wires anyway. Looking around the 50-60 range on the LCD's. I did check out some LED's the other day that were really nice but out of my price range for now.

Might sound stupid to you guys cause I am sure this site is geared more towards the full etnertainment system stuff but not looking for surround sound or anything like that. The TV speakers are just fine. Like I said, we hardly watch TV (maybe 2 hours a week?). However, we currently have a big 36" tube tv with a very big entertainment center. Our room is not overly big so to clear out some space would be nice.

I also agree with the internal dvd system. I would be afraid it would quit or something and then I would be going the other route anyway.

I know what you mean, I actually started out the same way and for about a year ran with just the TV speakers.  (And because my TV was the older mongo sized RPTV sort, they were decent speakers.)  Then someone talked me into trying out the 5.1 audio and it was a major "holy cow, I've been missing out!" moment.

And for TV, I still more or less agree with you, no big deal in most cases (although a good center channel will help you hear dialogue more clearly.)  But when it come to movies, there's no comparison.  I strongly suggest you look into a lower end, but quality, hometheater in a box (HTiB for short).  Onkyo is the most reliable in this segment of the market. And by that I mean you will get a quality system from Onkyo, even if it's not as good as the mainstream set-ups you'll see most often discussed around here.  With ther HTiBs you won't have that guarantee.  And one more thing, a 5.1, or even a 3.1 in your case, will be just fine.

If you take a look at all of the flat screens on the market you will find that they have one thing in common lousy speakers.  It's hard to put something decent sounding in a one inch wide space.  You will probably find that your old 36" tube has much better speakers than you will find in today's flat screens.  I don't have a TV in my house that doesn't  have some sort of a secondary audio system.   I have to admit that this may do in part to my Vietnam ears.
