Industry Insider program coming soon - Page 2

VISA, the credit card company? A HOME THEATER insider? I dont get it?

They are looking for feedback on a web product they are launching - and because our audience is technology savvy and also uses the internet a great deal, its a group one they think can provide great feedback.

There's definitely a difference between an Insider like Robert Harris (he's got an inside scoop on movie production but he's unaffiliated with a particular brand) and VISA (they are in Industry Insider meaning, an "inside" representative of a particular brand)

As such the badge:

is reserved for Industry Insiders, while those in the "Talk to the Insiders" area don't have an Insiders badge.

The question becomes Adam are they REALLY going to be able to take real feedback instead of just rah rah backpatting?

Because Sam's just the guy to dish it out.  Just ask Ron!

Well, in this case I presented my initial feedback as questions rather than unloading with both barrels, because I'm not sure that I specifically am the target audience for this service or if the average HTFer would be.  I want to learn more before I make a judgement, but even if I am not interested I'd like to leave constructive feedback on why that is the case rather than A. being a jerk about it or B. not saying anything at all.  My gut reaction is this is a, shall we say, inauspicious start, but again I'd rather give the benefit of the doubt before decrying it as a rent out of eyeballs =)

"Industry" That could cover a lot of places.
The "insider badge" seems like it could be misleading.

I think of an insider as someone who can give US information on products, movies, whatever, That us regular folk aren't normally privy too, not tell us about a product and ask us what we think about it.

These are, as you already said, representatives.

It's great that they want feedback from members of HTF, this doesn't make them insiders.

Well, maybe it's just semantics.
I just hope it doesn't turn into a big advertisement campaign disguised as inside information.

Maybe they should be Badged as a "representative" and not insider.
i.e. "Visa Representative" could be a badge or "Rightcliq Representative"

Brand page will be www.hometheaterforum.com/Righcliq (but give 'em a day or two to get it set up)

Look for more information about Rightcliq in the next HTF newsletter running this week...

It seems the real link is:

Ohh and by copying that link (which I've edited) I see this is coming from Jango =p  Well hidden!

Obviously HTF (and every other AV forum) wants senior Denon engineers to participate and discuss new model features six months before they go on sale. I'm sure they're also working on getting James Cameron to join and hang out in the Official Avatar Discussion Thread.

This is probably a bit difficult.

As they work on reeling in the big fish, they also catch some secondary insiders. Do they ignore these prospects, holding out for the ideal insiders? Or do they not let perfect be the enemy of good?

I don't understand how VISA Credit Card "insiders" using us for their market research actually benefits HTF membership. But it could be interesting and seems like reasonable stepping stones along the path to ultimate "insiders" the membership would hope for.

So true.  Our priority remains - studios first; hardware second; but when companies like VISA come calling to take advantage of the functionality we've built for the big fish, we're open to let them test it out.

It may not.  BUT participation in the VISA thread and in giving feedback is completely optional.  If you're not interested, then don't participate!

In addition our moderators will be watching, and VISA will not hijack threads or do anything to detract from the user experience on HTF.

Sam, you must have copied the link from the email we sent out - that Jango code is the tracking code that allows us to look at which links users are clicking on within the email - which helps us understand which sections of the email to continue writing, and which are less interesting and might need to be revised or replaced.

BTW was just chatting with Adam G on the phone and he said, I notice that the Rightcliq plug-in really slows down the performance of my browser.  That's the kind of feedback they need - they are in the product development phase and looking for ways to make the site/plugin better - so I encouraged him to post that in the thread!

Right, you may not recall this thread:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/293463/django-email-from-htf-danger-will-robinson

where your original implementation of Jango led to some of us questioning whether it was a legit HTF mail.  Since that time you guys have pretty well hidden the use Jango (Not Django which I originally wrote), and you have hidden some of the other partners you are working with, like the one you are using for amazon/itunes redirects.  I don't oppose the use of these 3rd parties but I've explained a few times why using unrevealed services like this make me VERY nervous and how more transparency = more trust.  It's Christmas time tho so I won't rehash that, I just wanted to explain why I called it out above.

OK, as I said that seems reasonable.  But this is something that is going to affect how participants discuss certain brands or people.  Once you know that you have the attention of people involved will that change the conversation?  It's a little bit like the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle =p  Let's say for example that someone politely questions the value of the services/products being represented or professes a preference for a competing product.  Will that be censored?

You?  Absolutely .  All kidding aside, no, not if its done respectfully.  If someone where to come into the thread and say "Anything from Visa sucks, American Express shopping rules!" We would probably have an issue.  I myself will be posting some feedback (some negative) about the product in the thread later this week.  If they want feedback the only way they will get a better product is by listening to constructive feedback.  As someone who has been on the receiving end of it for the last few months I can tell you that its not always fun, but it is valuable.

BTW we haven't turned on the insider tag yet for them, but you may see someone from Fox prowling around the HD SW area  Look for more additions in the coming weeks

Hahah yeah well I expected to be roasted like that.  I was going to invite you to see my response to Visa (

And make sure it checks out as OK but it seems you have just recently posted some feedback too, and that wasn't super positive either

And as for Fox insiders

Is James Winfield an insider?

He wrote a wiki about HT furniture and is promoting a particular HT Furniture Store in his sig...but there's no special tag next to his name.

It's all a little confusing.

No.  Thanks for letting me know.  I saw the wiki but didn't notice the signature which is against forum rules.  Insiders actually have a "tag" on their signature (see the first post in this thread: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/296426/curious-where-do-you-get-your-news-about-the-industry-outside-htf#post_3643365) There are two "lite" insiders in the deals area, but they listed right under the WRU link.  Had a conference call today finalizing the plan for another studio to come on board .

OK I took care of the sig.  The wiki was poorly worded.  I started to rewrite and then I realized I didn't have time. HT Market is a sponsor with a great selection of seating.  Sure enough I found a pretty good guide to seating on their site.  I'll work on getting permission to copy it to the wiki which I indicated is under construction.  Thanks again for the heads up.
