You could get a multi region Blu-Ray which would also play multi region dvd discs. That way you could save on space.

Agreed, Henry.  I know better than that myself and consequently have removed my post above asking about a particular show.  It's just not fair to Cliff to bombard him with requests and questions.  Hope others follow the advice.

Which is why its much more feasible to hack the region code on your existing DVD player.

You could have given me 30 guesses as to what Sony show I would guess on Shout picking up and I wouldn't have said Police Story. Its a very good show and I hope I'm wrong but I can't see an almost 40 year old anthology show selling very well. I'm sure we could all come up with lists of Sony shows that have a much higher profile. What's next, Farmer's Daughter (I hope!)?

Except that there is no hack code on the Panasonic player I have for main recording purposes which is why I had to buy the Philips region-free in the first place.

I'm not too keen on hunting high and low for "region free Blu Ray" especially when I might run the risk of certain discs not playing on that machine that play fine on existing players.      I'd rather spend the money on more regular DVD releases I like.

That's a good point about the hack codes.  They will work on many players but not all and some brands, like Panasonic and some or most Pioneer models have no published hack codes that will work.  That's why I bought a std chipped Pioneer player several years ago (lifetime warranty to play back any std region disc).

Regarding BR, they're catching up with std chipped player technology.  Now there are players available that will play all regions for std and br discs, as well as being firmware upgradeable for periodic BR updates.  The players that I looked at this week have the lifetime warranty that covers the modifications.   Recent models are now including the internal PAL/NTSC Converters.

The pricepoints are still a little high for me though so I've not bought a R-Free BR player yet.

Not wishing to derail this thread any further - but I was able to find a Blu-Ray multi region player (which plays all regions of dvds and BR) for around $100 at Best Buy (of all places). So far I have played around six hundred discs (BR, dvd, dvd-r), all with no issues.

Wow, talk about disheartening! I never thought "Maude" would be a victim of music rights issues. So much for my favorite show (aside from my bootleg set and personal VHS tapes). Now that I think about it, "It's a Living" may suffer the same fate because of the various tunes Sonny would croon behind the piano. Depressing :(

There must be a LOT of music on Maude for music rights to quash it (as in comparable to WKRP in Cincinnati or The Wonder Years). Shout! has usually been good about clearing music.

Still, the fact that Police Story has been remastered makes me more interested in this show as a blind buy.

Police Story and Kojak are now available for pre-order at Amazon.  Kojak seems to be afflicted with the negative reviews for the bad Medium Rare release--hope Shout and Amazon can get this fixed.

Wes, I'm taking my off topic question to a PM. Watch out for it. Thanks.

I stumbled onto the end of an episode last night with Tony Lo Bianco on an undercover assignment as a pimp.  The first thing that jumped out at me was the clothing and hairstyles from that period.  I watched Police Story faithfully back during its run on network television and I hope (and believe) that I will enjoy revisiting this series.  40 years - damn.

Was the episode "The Freeway Killings" an original script and also a three hour episode (without ads, roughly what would be the total running time?) or a three part story? I'm hoping it's the former. Based on EpGuides.com's episode list for Police Story, this episode was the last one shown on NBC (in May 1987).

It was a three-hour episode. In 1987, without commercials, that would have been around 140 minutes or so.

I was thinking around 140 minutes without ads. Thanks for answering my question.

Sadly, it would only be about 125 minutes if it were today!

I don't have independent knowledge as far as your other question, but the IMDB credits the episode as an original script. They often have omissions, although the credit list is pretty extensive in this case.

Yep, sadly that's how long the episode would be today. See, as "The Freeway Killings" was the only NBC episode shown in the late 80's and was close to the start of the ABC episodes of Police Story, I wondered if the script was original or a rewrite.

Really looking forward to next month's release of the first season. We need to get our support behind this title, so that there's a greater chance of seeing future seasons.

Snagged a copy today, as usual I dropped by a local independent outfit while riding my bike around and found some in stock, they just received them today- I will definitely let those interested know how good it looks when I view it later this evening.

Six discs in total. They also alternate between blue and yellow.

Watched two episodes tonight, the pilot ( Slow Boy ) and Dangerous Games. The pilot looked decent, but there were specks present at times, not quite up to par with say Adam 12 but Dangerous Games was definitely a step up. I was more than satisfied with what we have been given from Shout so I'm happy.

Do local independent outfits stock DVD titles a week before the release date?

I think some of the smaller shops just put them out on display when the shipment arrive,
and don't wait for the launch day. I suppose they figure nobody will notice,
unlike the big chain stores or on-line retailers, who are going to get caught putting them
out early, but it's a nice way to snag a few sales before their competition has them out.
Well, in my case the business I frequent just happens to usually sell what they get in, so that tends to be a few days earlier and occasionally more than a week. I find the smaller independents such as Shout! ship their product earlier. I should mention that the Pilot episode was a great introduction to the series with a very good cast including Chuck Conners as the main crook along with Vic Morrow, Ed Asner, Harry Gaurdino, Ralph Meeker and Diane Baker. They and others did a great job with Chuck Conners making it easy to really dislike his character. The scene with Harry Gaurdino explaining why he has a problem with a certain group of people - I will not be specific here, and in the context of the time period the series was made was funny the way it came across. I just cannot get enough of these great shows, and I do hope there is enough interest shown for them to complete the series.

Brent, I had to re-read your post with the pics of the Police Story: Season One (Region 1) set, as I've watched the two video clips (one is a promo for the set, and the other is a two minute clip from the pilot movie "Slow Boy"). The promo stated it was a five disc set and "Big John Morrison" wasn't mentioned as one of the extras ("Slow Boy" and the interview with the show's creator were mentioned).

I notice the modern Sony Pictures Entertainment logo on the rear boxart.

Richard - of the six discs in the set the Ripper, Country Boy and Big John Morrison are on the fifth disc in that order. It is mentioned as a Movie Of The Week. I'm afraid that I will go through the 21 episodes rather quickly at the rate I am going.Finished Collision Course with Hugh O'Brian last night and, as usual found it quite good.

I pre-ordered my copy on Amazon I think it is still at about 25.99 for the season. That is NOT a bad price at all.

Forgot to state in my previous post, that the two video clips are on Amazon.com's listing page for Police Story: Season One. Why I mentioned the modern Sony Pictures logo, was because I wondered if when the first season originally aired on NBC, was a Columbia or Sony logo shown at the end of each episode.

Sony didn't buy Columbia until 1989, so there's no way any Sony logo would have aired there originally.

Very quick post indeed. Thanks for clearing up that query.
