63" Samsung PN63B590T5 Plasma

Hello,
I received a replacement tv from Best Buy due to my Samsung DLP dying out on me. I ended up getting the 63" Samsung PN63B590T5. They offered a calibration for $199. I told them that I will think about getting the calibration. I wanted to research before I make my decision. Is a calibration required for plasma tv's? If so, are there any other options besides BB? Or the should I just let BB do the calibration?

Mike,

I can't answer your question about having calibration done by BB, but I am very interested in your opinion of this tv.  I am considering buying one, and the only one I have seen in a showroom was way out of adjustment.  Any thoughts from you would be appreciated.  Thanks!

It's an excellent tv. It is a replacement of my Samsung 56" DLP(thank god for warranties). I was going to get a LCD but I didn't want to go down in size . I had it for about a month now and I'm loving it. The picture is excellent but I was hearing that these tv's require a calibration to get the full effect.

Almost any TV will look better with a professional calibration, but if you don't want to pay for one, you can do a rudimentary one yourself with various calibration programs like DVE. Also, there are forums you can visit and get some pointers on starter settings for your TV if you haven't already done this.

Thanks for your reply. I just remembered BB gave me free calibration. I did some research going from site to site trying to get some opinions and an idea  on what to look for. The BB tech came by today and I was asking him questions like I was a detective. He seemed like he knew what he was doing. I asked to explain what he was doing and he was thorough and knowledgeable. I also noticed he had the equipment that many people said that was required for the calibration process. He did tell me that they have three techs. He is the primary and they use his alternates when he's off or on vacation. According to what the tech told me his counterparts only know the basics and really don't know what they are doing half of the time. He also said he has been ISF certified for three years and he has been doing calibration the whole time. Once he completed the job I wasn't disappointed at all.
