Soundproofing

Hello everyone, I just moved into a new apartment a month or so ago and while the walls themselves are quiet solid and dampen sound quiet well from what I can tell. The main door into the hallway however I can see causing a bit of a problem in the future, it is a steel construction and well any sound even conversations at a reasonable level can be heard right through it not to mention the sound from my computer and home theater speakers.

So the question I have is, are there any materials out there that anyone knows about that would attach to the back of the door and actually provide any worthwhile effect. Or if there's any other suggestions I'll gladly take them.

You have to add mass to stop sound.  So attching something like concrete backer board or QuietRock would help.  Also a soundprood door sill needs to be added.  The added mass will be ugly unless you can find some way to pretty it up.  I've see some of those soundproof door sills and for my budget they are very expensive.

Another option is a solid core door but being in an apartment you may not be able to replace the door.  And a quality door isn't cheap.

Since this is an apartment I don't think you are going to make any major changes to your door that will permanently alter it.   Remember that sub woofer frequencies travel much further through solid material than higher frequencies.  If you are concerned about complaints from your neighbors keeping your sub turned down, it would also help a bit if you had plenty of sound adsorbing material like carpeting, fur nature, wall treatments in your room.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear but this experience may cause you to save your pennies and buy a cabin in the woods where you can play your music as loud as you like.

My sister is having the same issue in her apartment? Did you have any luck with soundproofing your door? She would appreciate any feedback from your experience.
